Super Furry Archaeology

candylion.jpg Gruff Rhys, front man of trippy Welsh popsters The Super Furry Animals, released his second solo album back in January, Candylion. (Here's the promo site.) Its mellow quirky tunes will appeal to fans of the Furries. I particularly like the title track, "Beacon in the Darkness" and the hummable "The Court of King Arthur".

I keep an eye open for pop lyrics having to do with archaeology. Here and here, for example, are two songs about bog bodies. And on Candylion we find the following fine example, indicating that Mr Rhys has been watching Time Team:

The Court of King Arthur

By Gruff Rhys

Creepy crawly creeping up to the sun,
Digging deeper I hit on an ancient lump,
Lift my spade up,
And dig a bit deeper,
Must be careful with my magnetometer,
Excavation takes a long time;
First I survey,
Then I dig through the lime.
So make some space now 'cause I'm digging for treasure,
I'm digging deep for the court of king Arthur, Arthur.

Hieroglyphics tell me you're here somewhere,
Been radiocarbon-dating for years and years,
How I've missed you by just a few inches,
Found your hand,
But you don't pull no punches,
I found my mummy,
I found her in rags,
Under pyramids,
Artefacts are calling me under,
'cause I'm digging for treasure,
I'm digging deep for the court of king Arthur, Arthur.

Round the table,
So round the table,
Found the table glistening in the sun,
So help me out now 'cause I'm digging for treasure,
I dug deep for the court of King Arthur.

Thanks for the heads-up... I'm going to have to grab a couple of these tracks for my radio show next week!
