Chester library has two thematic fiction sections that I've never seen at Swedish libraries. One offers historical fiction. The other, also quite large, is all mystery novels set in the distant past -- labelled "Past Crimes"....

One of my favorites is the Brother Cadfael series by Elis Peters, about a 12th century monk who solves murders using his knowledge of herbs and past experiences in the Crusades. Some of these were made into a TV series with Derek Jacobi.
Tudor-era settings are also popular.

I didn't notice that you are in Chester. The Brother Cadfael series is set nearby, in Shrewsbury.
