  • Friday night I unexpectedly found myself looking at dinner all alone. So I quickly arranged for a visit with friends to a Jamaican restaurant (I had jerk chicken), and after our meal Swedepat beat me and Dr Sandy at Race for the Galaxy.

  • Saturday was mainly chores, but in the evening the Rundkvist family (including 6-y-o Juniorette) played Dungeonquest/Drakborgen and of course got their characters soundly killed.
  • Sunday morning being extremely snowy and bright with sunshine, I went skiing twice, once with Junior and once with this awesome chick who likes to hang out with me.
  • Then in the afternoon and early evening I introduced Junior, Paddy K, Paddy Jr and Melliferax to the classic Swedish fantasy role-playing game Drakar och Demoner, “Dragons and Demons”. At the close of the gaming session, the characters were huddled behind the altar in the ruin of the Mountain Goddess’s shrine, wounded by goblin arrows and debating whether they should pay a visit to the large disgruntled troll in the desecrated crypt under their feet.

    Having ‘saved’ the previous world to death, an all new line-up of intrepid heros will start in on a whole, new world. And may all the game-gods have mercy on its soul.

    I took my daughter curling for the first time this weekend. She liked sliding around, and really liked sweeping. She’s only 5, so she couldn’t do much with it, but she had a really good time and can’t wait for me to take her again next weekend.

    We’re playing Mutants and Masterminds. I’m not wildly enamoured of the combat system, and grappling is, as usual, a bit of a pain to work out, but it’s what the guys wanted to play.

    I’m really out of touch with RPGs these days. I hadn’t heard of M&M though it was published in 2002. Last Sunday we did play an RPG from 1986, though. (-;

    Apparently M&M is more like the more recent editions of D&D; 3.5 and 4. The larger part of the group is guys in their 20s, so they are very comfortable with those games, broadly tainted with computer game “RPGs”.

    We used to play the mutant AD&D 1st and 2nd edition (with house rules) that my husband and I have played forever (early ’80s? Time is a difficult concept…), with one of us DMing, or the old revised Marvel Super Heroes, which had its own problems.

    Mutants & Masterminds is very…munchkinable, if you know what I mean.

    Aha. I wasn’t referring to the card game Munchkin, which is frickin’ awesome (I especially like Munchkin Cthulhu!), but the behaviour that the game parodies and takes its name from. Wikipedia has an entry about it, here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munchkin_(role-playing_games). The most relevant bit is this:

    Munchkins are infamous for various degrees of cheating, willfully misinterpreting rules that work against them while loudly proclaiming ones that work in their favor. As a matter of course they selectively obey the letter of rules while perverting the spirit blatantly. The worst munchkins will cheat shamelessly, ignoring inconvenient numerical modifiers and fouling dice throws till they get the result they want. During character creation, munchkins engage in vicious min-maxing, leading to exceptionally unrealistic or unusual characters who make no sense except in terms of raw power.

    A “munchkin” is sort of the antithesis of the roleplayer. And I am definitely a roleplayer! :)

    Hehe, a munchkin-like player would get really frustrated with me as their game master. I rarely use the rules, preferring to let happen that which serves plot purposes.

    Went to the Olympics. Watched Team Sweden beat one team on the weekend, then loose to another last night. It wouldn’t have mattered much who won or who lost, as the atmosphere was electric, but I am Swedish and my brother is on the bench (not a player but the physio guy, so I was partial this time… What an unexpectedly positive experience for me, my husband and my kids!
