Profile

afarcomp3.jpg Afarensis is a 3.5-2.8 million year old hominin from the Kada Hadar member of the Hadar formation in the Middle Awash, Ethiopia. He is approximately 41 inches tall, weighs approximately 60 pounds and has a cranial capacity of a whopping 410 cc (approximately). Afarensis is currently considered to be transitional between apes and humans and displays some traits of both. Since he spends a lot of time on the couch watching monster movies, some observers question whether he is an obligate biped (although no one has observed him climbing a tree). He also has a blog called Transitions:The Evolution of Life His previous blog can be found here.

"Man stands alone in the universe, a unique product of a long, unconcious, impersonal material process with unique understanding and potentialities. These he owes to no one but himself, and it is to himself that he is responsible. He is not the creature of uncontrollable and undeterminable forces, but his own master. He can and must decide and manage his own destiny."

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Isn't This One of the Signs of the Apocalypse?

I saw this and dropped my lighter on the floor just to check and make sure gravity is still working. (Hat tip to Eschaton)....

The Cost of the Iraqi War

There have been a number of figures put on the cost of the war in Iraq, with the most recent being somewhere in the neighborhood of one trillion dollars. There have also been a number of estimates of the death...

The Cowardice of the Discovery Channel

I've been meaning to mention this story for about a week now. It concerns some cowardly behavior on the part of the Discovery Channel. You see, they bought the American rights to Taxi to the Darkside - a documentary that...

Huckabee Winning Missouri? I May Have to Borrow a Paper Bag From Orac

I may have to borrow a paper bag from Orac to hide my face in if this holds up! Huckabee winning Missouri? With 29% of the vote being reported Huckabee is leading McCain (not that he is much better) by...

Missouri Republicans Find Their Posterchild

Here in Missouri there is a movement afoot to change the way judges are chosen. Currently this is the way it works: Judges who serve under this plan have been nominated by a judicial commission and then selected by the...

Some Advice For the Democrats

I offer this advice because apparently the Democratic Party is in serious need of advice. Once again they are getting played by a president who's approval ratings are in the thirties. Republicans are departing left and right and Republican prospects...

Why I Hope McCaskill has a Democratic Opponent Come Re-Election Time

The reason is that she has become a "Lieberman" democrat. Fresh off suggestingt that Missouri would go to the GOP if Hillary is the presidential nominee she goes and helps the republicans in their quest to give retroactive immunity to...

Go Back to Minnesota, or, This is Why You Would Have to be Insane to Vote Republican

From Think Progress: Today, Rep. Eric Cantor (VA), the chief deputy Republican whip in the House, unveiled his proposal to stimulate the economy. His legislation -- the so-called Middle Class Job Protection Act -- does nothing for the middle class....

Security? Maybe the Republicans Shouldn't Run on It

Coturnix asks Security! The issue Republicans run on (or should they?). He is joking of course, but I would like to seriously ask the question because of this:...

Deleting Government Emails: The Epidemic Spreads

I'm sure some of you remember all the fuss about the White House deleting emails? Apparently, the epidemic of government officials deleting their emails is spreading to the Governor of Missouri. According to a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch article an...

I Blame Claire McCaskill, Or What Happens When Congress Becomes an Advisory Body

Claire McCaskill voted for the recent wiretapping law that gave the Bush administration sweeping new powers to spy on Americans. Just how sweeping, and just how badly the Democrats bungled the bill is now becoming evident. According to a New...

When Did We Become the Enemy?

A little known provision in the Patriot Act gives Albert Gonzales to "fast track" executions in death penalty cases. As the L. A. Times points out: The rules implement a little-noticed provision in last year's reauthorization of the Patriot Act...

Misleading Post-Dispatch Article About the War

So far, the idea has not attracted the attention of Democratic leaders. They are under substantial pressure by anti-war groups to consider only legislation that orders troops from Iraq. Says the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. This, despite the fact that a...

See! I'm Not the Only One Who Thinks That

Earlier today I wrote that we needed to start cutting the White House budget in order to force them to comply with congressional subpoenas. I'm happy to see that someone else agrees with me. Maybe if the electricity in the...

Maybe It Is Time

I find this deeply disturbing. Clearly it is time for Congress to take the next step. If it were me I'd cut the White House budget by about a third just to get their attention. The British make their Prime...

Frightening Thought of The Day

Via Think Progress comes a report about the President and a recent meeting with supporters: Friends of his from Texas were shocked recently to find him nearly wild-eyed, thumping himself on the chest three times while he repeated "I am...
