During an panel on Global Trends in HIV Risk Behaviors, BM Ramesh presented some interesting research on female sex wokers in three districts in the state of Karnataka in India. A sex worker's vulnerability to becoming infected with HIV may depend on how their business is organized. Ramesh and his colleagues surveyed nearly 1,200 women who worked out of home-based sites, brothels or public places. Overall, 23.4% had been infected with HIV, but the prevalance varied quite a bit depending on their locale. Brothel-based sex workers were 3 times as likely to be infected with HIV than homebased workers. (The rates were 15% for home-base dworkers, 47% for brothel-based workers and 26% for street-based workers.) The brothel-based workers tended to be younger, single and have more clients than the others, which Ramesh thought played a role in infection rates. He says the information can be used to better target prevention strategies in the region. He also plans to carry out a survey of the clients, to see how HIV prevalance varies among them.
