Check out these remarkable photos of patterns grown in Japanese rice fields using different strains of pigmented rice. A number of commenters on the thread at funster have suggested the photos are faked, so I found this Japanese news clip on YouTube. I like the art in the video clip even better! :)

That field in the posted video reminds me of the wood block print "the wave". The other videos that pop up afterwards have amazing images in them as well, and most seem to be advertisements.
I know Japan is working to preserve their rice farms (the old ones with the integrated ecosystem) in order to protect biodiversity and habitats. Maybe this is one of their ideas, to use the paddies for advertising revenue to make it worthwhile to the 'Mom & Pop' farmers to keep their farms active.

Yes, 'the wave', I'm at my desk at an art gallery, 20 feet away is a large mural of a giant squid attacking a galley in a storm, that was largely copied from that picture. I like the rice version better!
