The ScienceBlogs Book Club is back!
From October 1 through October 10, we'll be discussing Autism's False Prophets, by Dr. Paul Offit.
Dr. Offit will be joined on the blog by a panel of experts, and we're inviting all of you to join in by reading the book at home, and contributing your thoughts, questions, and comments in the 'comments' section of the posts. Our panelists will be reading them and responding.
More good news: Columbia University Press is giving away 50 copies of Autism's False Prophets free to ScienceBlogs Book Club readers.
To get yours, submit your name here. The first 50 names and addresses we receive will be mailed a free book.
We ask only that if you receive a free book, you read it, follow along with the Book Club conversation in early October, and leave at least three comments or questions during the Club.
We're very glad to be back, and are anticipating a great discussion.

Welcome to The ScienceBlogs Book Club, Seed's virtual venue for hosting discussions on stimulating new titles in science, featuring reviews from across the ScienceBlogs network.

Woo hoo! I was wondering where youse guys had gone. . . .

I'm in. I'm new to the SciBlog BC, but not to Dr. Offit's book. I'm writing a long review for one of my grad school (M.Ed.) classes. This gives me a better deadline.
I've been spending a lot of time with chapter 4, particularly on the notion that electronic meetings (as opposed to face-to-face) had a deleterious effect on decision-making.

I was wondering if the BC was going to end up being a one-shot deal. Good to see it coming back. I often see Dr. Offit's name mentioned in the articles over on Science-Based Medicine about the antivaxxers who still claim that there's a causal link between vaccines and autism. It'll be good to get an in depth overview from him on the subject.

Great, glad you're back. I liked the last one.

I just got notice that my book has shipped today. I'm looking forward to reading it - although I may be compelled to do so in one sitting - and discussing it here.

Splendid! I suppose this means I need to wrap up my current book to clear the way for this one.

Yes! I just picked the book up at my local independent bookstore, sat with it at lunch, and my fellow workers were all thrilled to see it. We are probably going to buy a copy for the practice, available to parents/patients (dental).
This newest antivax wave has a lot of momentum. We are seriously contemplating whether we will have to segregate the unvaxed in a separate waiting room.

It seems I was too late to get a free copy :-( Anyway, shipping to Poland would take some time... Is it possible to buy this book in an electronic version?
Posted by: Jan Stradowski | September 18, 2008 6:34 AM
I'm so glad to hear that you're excited.
Jan, I'm not sure whether an electronic version is available. There is a brief YouTube video of Dr. Offit discussing the book, though.

Hey, book arrived but I never got an email (Possibly because I used a "+" sign in the address for spam trap purposes; it's still a valid email but has confused some software in the past).
Anyway, I'll be sure to read it in time for the book club.

My book arrived unexpectedly as I also did not get an email. I am very excited to be reading this book and see what other people think about it.
I must finish two other books first.

Whooo! I just got it in the mail today. I had no idea for the first hour or so why I was getting this random book I had vaguely heard of but couldn't remember where from ..... looking forward to reading it!

Mark another down for no email, but book received.
I'm excited to even read a nice hardcover book with that fresh off the press smell. It's been the library and used book store for me as of late. This is like your lover wearing an exciting new fragrance.
