Yesterday, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signed a repeal of a 2003 law requiring abortion providers to notify at least one parent 48 hours in advance of performing an abortion on a minor. The law was never enforced iowing to a lawsuit by Planned Parenthood.
New Hampshire is the first state to repeal an existing notification law of this type.
Lynch said simply:
"I strongly believe parents should be involved in these decisions, providing important support and guidance," said Lynch. "Unfortunately, that is not possible in every case. The Supreme Court found this law unconstitutional because it fails to protect the health and safety of all women, which is why I am signing its repeal."
That's right. Minors enjoy the protection of the Constitution, too.
Expect howls of outrage from the usual suspects. I don't have children and -- though I agreewith Lynch's rationale; it's difficult not to -- I don't hold especially passionate views on this particular issue, as many parents of teens understandably do. But I'm prepared to defend the actions of my home state against noisy hilljacks blogging incoherently from afar.
