The BALCO trials are officially underway, and its targets are finding out that it's not about the drugs anymore -- it's the dishonesty, stupid.
If Barry Bonds believed that his fame and fortune would allow him to slide on federal charges, he may be starting to rethink that philosophy. The government has far more resources that the all-time dinger king could ever dream of, and if it's one thing the feds don't let pass with wink-winks or slaps on the wrist, it's lying to them.
The wording of the AP story is amusing:
"Bonds originally was charged with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for lying about whether he knowingly used illegal substances on Nov. 15."
Now, how can anyone lie four times about one steroid binge? Maybe it went like this:
"Mr. Bonds, did you knowingly use drugs on November 15, 2007?"
"Hell no."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Really sure?"
"Absolutely."
"You're not just telling us what we want to hear, are you?"
"Nope."
Okay, that's not what the wire story meant, but either way Bonds' future continues to grow murkier and more ominous.

Obviously the trial isn't over so this is all assuming he is guilty.
Good. I can't stand Bonds. I've hated him since he played with Pittsburgh in the early 90's. One of my all time favorite moments in sports is when he failed to throw out Sid Bream at the plate in the 1992 NLCS, allowing the Braves (the team I've always rooted for) to make it to the World Series.
But the reason I don't like him has nothing to do with being on the opposite side of the Braves for so many years in Pittsburgh and then San Fran, it's because he is a pompous jackass. The fact that he may very well be a cheating pompous jackass and therefor a hypocrite really brings it all full circle.
