No editorializing is needed on this. As the Pope himself admits, you're either a Catholic who accepts this weirdness without blinking or a thinking human being (Catholic in name or otherwise) who can only shake his or head when confronted with the kind of foolishness that terms like "outdated" only glorify.

Hmm... I'm afraid I'm not a good Catholic as this practice deeply confuses and disturbs me.
The line about the ritual essentially marrying them to Christ should also be up in your quote, really brings out the idea of the Catholic church marrying hundreds to Christ.
Bleh, I'd comment more but just thinking about this topic hurts my brain and makes it want to run away.

Seems the proofreading part of my brain already escaped. That middle line should be for Mustafa Mond.

So is this the Bizarro Universe version of the Islamic 72 virgins thing?

Felstatsu,
you got the idea: run away
Now: do it!

Um, no, that won't work. To become brides of Jebus, okay, I'll play along, but to become wives the marriages must be consummated, and there is only one way that happens. And, no, only the literal way will do, none of this 'figuratively speaking', but thanks for asking.

"A U.S. group which attended the conference estimated there are more than 3,000 consecrated Catholic virgins worldwide."
Gee, that many.
Posted by: Crudely Wrott | May 15, 2008 8:46 PM
"...hundreds of consecrated virgins from dozens of countries meeting in Rome."
Did they travel on Virgin airlines?

Let's see: 3000/72 = 46.6667. Hummmm.
