ScienceBlogs Book Club: Inside the Outbreaks

Profile

It is a really simple idea - things that can't go on the way they have been, usually don't. Sooner or later things that have no future just stop. We all know intellectually that we can't all live and consume like middle class Americans, that our kids are going to have a harder time because of our way of life, that Empires end and ecological disasters cause things to come to hard stops. We know it, but we don't KNOW it. This blog is about coming to KNOW, and figuring out where we go from here. I'm a science writer, teacher, environmental activist and small farmer who is trying to put her lifestyle where her mouth is, and live in a way with a future. When not writing books, serving on the board of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas, I run my farm with my husband, where we raise dairy goats, herbs, pastured poultry, heirloom vegetable plants, children and havoc.

Burned Out and On Vacation

Category: writerly things
Posted on: March 16, 2010 4:47 PM, by Sharon Astyk

Hi Folks - I've been under the weather physically and stressed out mentally, overwhelmed by a book that isn't coming together and generally pretty unhappy recently, and I have decided it behooves me to take a vacation from the blog. So no posts for a least a week. I'm talking with my publisher about how to handle the book situation, but mostly, I need to get away from my computer for a while. Back when I've got my mental health back. And apologies to anyone I owe email or attention to - I will write back soon!

Sharon

Sounds like you shouldn't come back until your Vitamin H [1] levels are back to nominal.

Be well.

I'm sorry to hear that Sharon. I'll miss your updates, but I know how important mental health is. Enjoy the relaxation and I hope you feel better soon.

Sharon,
After your last post on how sad the people in our country are, I am not surprised you need a break.

Dear Sharon,

Take all the time you need. Then take the time you don't need but want. We'll still be here when you come back.

Eric, you reading this? Lock her laptop away where she can't find it. Thanks.

Sharon,

Taking care of yourself always comes first. We love you and will be here when you are feeling like yourself again.

And just for YOU, I'm inviting people over for a gardening class out in our backyard. See what you have started. :)

Sharon,

Perhaps as you may have guessed, I've been facing a similar mental burnout situation. Sometimes we try to take on so much, knowing that there is so much to do, but in the end, we're all finite.

We'll all still be here, so take your time. Time away is something I'll be taking too. :-)

Good for you. It's critical to put your own mask on first, then help others :-) Nothing good comes from the reverse.

Just wish we were close enough to give you a hand through this time. Relax and feel better soon!

Hang in there! And don't expect perfection on the book - you will never achieve it. Go for Good Enough!

Rest and enjoy the beginning of spring. Delving into the world's problems must get depressing.

As for the book: fellow writer here. I feel your pain! (Pretty much literally at the moment, but at least my deadline's further off.)

Sharon,

We'll still be here.

Good decision, Sharon. It's so important to take time for yourself (and family). I've been going through something similar over the past year.

I'm looking forward to your posts and books when you've come back after taking time to rest.

all best, Bart / EB

Same from me ... take as much time as you need. May you feel better in every way soon!

No hurry, take your time. We could all use a vacation from our computers :)

Take your time! It will be the insanely busy planting & poop spreading season soon enough. It's always important to take time off in spring, even if for no better reason than to go fishing and appreciate the crocuses.

If you feel a little bit like we're all on the Bus To Hell, well, you can sit next to me and I promise I'll let you pick the music ;-)

Hi Sharon,

As I was waiting for your site to pop up, I thought to myself, "I wonder how she does it? She has 4 children and she does this ... and that ... . I don't think I could do it all ... maybe I will ask her. Maybe she secretly has a nanny helping her and she is not letting on ...

Take care! You are worth it.

Sharon, Go slowly. Catch your breath. The book will turn out great in the end. Plant something. You are wicked awesome. I think I'll leave my computer off all day tomorrow.

Thanks for all you do (including not doing it!).

Only a week? I have just completed a complete walk-away from ALL news for a week and I plan to extend it. Just about all the news is bad, and you can bet that if you stayed away for a month, when you came back, it would be like you never left: climate change, peak everything and the economy worse, worst-case scenarios continue to come true and etc..

Our elites have us in wars where we are slaughtering civilians and leaving their air, land and water polluted with Depleted Uranium. The whole situation is insane, and I aint using poetic metaphor. Take more than a week, youll be glad you did
