I believe that the struggle to achieve a goal provides context success but a final accomplishment of a goal is still the most important factor. Just trying isn't enough. A more nuanced thought would be that we should all try to maximize the potential of the situation we are given.
Very simply an individual born with the advantages of brains, money and education is judged on a different scale than someone born without those benefits. It all begins with expectations. If you would judge equal levels of accomplishment but one individual had to strive harder to reach that goal, then yes that would be a greater success. Conversely someone born with all the advantages of life but achieves little is a larger failure than their disadvantaged counterpart who is expected to fail.
