Your Puritans would be very at home in modern Britain, which is fast becoming a surveillance society with our civil liberties under constant attack (in the name of the War on Terror) and our behaviour subject to a torrent of petty laws.
Example? Wearing a t-shirt with 'Bollocks to Blair' on it (a perfectly reasonable and restrained sentiment) will get you a fine - against which you have no appeal - on the sunny side of $150.
