Preview poll for today's post

Think about an angry face. Make a picture of it in your mind. Then, answer the poll below.

I'll add in a bit of extra space here so you don't see the poll before you picture an angry face.

Thanks! We'll have more discussion about this poll, along with some exciting research, later today.

Update: See the post about the research behind this poll here.

You might want to ask gender of respondants.

2

I was thinking the same thing.

3

First I pictured an angry man, then I brought it up again as I was scrolling down and I pictured my mom angry at me when I was younger.

4

I wonder if the angry face people pictured was a particular person they know.

Gender too was something that I was thinking about as being a good follow up question. But then I thought, what about the gender you find yourself attracted to, or the gender of the last person you were in a relationship with? After all, the people we see angry the most are likely to be our significant others.

I pictured an angry emoticon >:(

7

I also thought it would be a good idea to ask the gender of the respondent!
Anyway, I pictured an angry male - comic-book style

8

I too pictured an angry emoticon. D:

9

I also pictured an angry emoticon.

10

I guess the question now must be: what gender are angry emoticons?

Posted by: Andrew B | December 17, 2008 3:07 PM

11

I think there should also be a response "Genderless".

Hey, we can't do everything in one poll! But in a few minutes I'll post the results of a study which does everything you're asking and more...

I thought of an emoticon as well. @_@

I could not answer the poll. When I scrolled down to the question, I realized that I had not assigned a gender to angry face.

I pictured the last person I talked, which happened to be a female member of our accounting staff.

Peter Finch as Howard Beale, from the 1976 movie Network. "I'm Mad As Hell...."

It made an impression on me when I saw the movie about age 12 on the local independent station, shortly before FOX started as a network.

17

I also didn't assign a gender.

I don't think you'd want a genderless answer - if you want to have people picture a specific person, real or imaginary, well, few people are genderless.

I pictured myself, then my mother. Apparently I have angry family tendancies.

I also came up with an emoticon. But I thought it looked male.

I based my image off the most consistently angry person I know; my male boss. When I think of the word angry, he's the first person that comes to my mind every time. So this was not gender related for me, it was based on personal experience.
