Bacteria trained to detect mines

Not all intelligence is brainy.

Land mines are still one of most dangerous hazards affecting many countries, especially developing ones, with almost 20,000 new casualties every year. Since their location is unknown, previous techniques of mine-detecting have proven to be slow, costly and mostly ineffective. This special brand of glowing bacteria, however, might be a huge step forward in fighting the problem and once again shows the great potential of technology.

And now we turn to the topic of Artificial Intelligence ...

Artificial Intelligence as a term implies that there is a "natural" intelligence we wish to replicate in the lab and then engineer in any one of several practical contexts. There is nothing in the term that implies that "intelligence" be human, but the implication is clear that such a thing as "intelligence" exists and that we have some clue as to what it is.

But it might not, and we don't.
Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post...

Though computers have gotten faster, smaller and more versatile, it's still a big challenge to get them to demonstrate intelligent behaviors. Will machines like robots ever match -- or perhaps even exceed -- the capabilities of the human brain? QUEST meets a robot that in ten years time could take care of tasks around the house that most of us would rather not do.
Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post...

"From Nov 10th to Nov 13th the Brazilian Government hosted a public hacking contest to test the robustness of its voting machines. 38 participants from private and public IT companies (including the Brazilian Federal Police) were divided into 9 teams, which tried several different approaches to try to tamper with the software installed on the machines, and even to physically interfere in other stages of the process. All attempts (aside from a minor one which would not compromise the overall results) failed, and observations from the participants and neutral observers will be taken into account to improve the process even further. Here is the official announcement for the contest (Google translation; Portuguese original). A summary of the results is available in the Brazilian press (original). Brazilian voting machines use Linux."
Read the comments on this post...

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the Uncanny, I will fear no doppelgangers ...

When I was a little kid, I woke from a nap to a sense of strangeness that eventually led to horror. My eyes opened and I could see in a jar sitting on a shelf near by bed, the reflection of my bedroom window, with the porch and the yard visible outside in the bright afternoon sun. That was as it should be. But there was also something there that should not have been there. There was the arm of a giant hair monster extending up from below the window ledge, groping around, I assumed, for a way to open the window and come inside and eat me.
Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post...
