The addition of snowmobiles disrupting the winter tranquility of Yellowstone National Park has long been a subject of controversy. Under a proposal, drafted by park administrators and released on Tuesday, snowmobiles would become a permanent winter fixture, allowing up to 750 snowmobiles per today. ( Guardian Unlimited)

Actually this proposal is what is currently going on with the addition that the snowmobiles must be "low-emitting" and there is a limit on coaches (which is meaningless because the limit is more than what is happening now). So it just codifies the status quo - there won't be more snowmobiles.
I wasn't down to the snowmobiles allowed area but I have been in the Lamar valley and up by Mammoth this winter. It is still the best time to see Yellowstone. All you have to do is get to the park edge by Cooke City and there are a zillion "sled" (what everybody seems to call snowmobiles there) trails.
Like it or not humans are a part of this park. Every wolf band has its groupies - even in winter. I would rather the "sleds" weren't there, but I don't believe they are ruining the park as is, so I would rather the use be codified now, rather than having them create some guided trails up to the Lamar or some other disaster like that.
