About

I've had a lifelong and abiding interest in natural history and the environment. Aside from two natural-resource management internships and a brief stint as a backcountry ranger, I've specialized in environmental issues throughout my writing career. Beginning as a content specialist for online portals in 1996.

A classic dot-com flameout, I took a 4 year hiatus from online projects. And then Web 2.0 came roaring back, making the same kind of promises. Suddenly the Internet was fun again.

Here's a few things you ought to know about me:

I had a great introduction to print journalism. In 2003, I was awarded a media fellowship by the Society of Environmental Journalists for my coverage of marine reserves.

Producers like to turn my stories into documentaries. That's okay. I might get the chance to produce a feature-length documentary of my own. Collaborating with the filmmaker Pat R. Notaro on a film project called A Walk on Water.

In 2005, I began editing a small but not inconsequential blog called commonground. Frequented by publishers, pundits and producers that eventually brought me to the attention of Seed media.

Hopefully, commonground will pique your interest. So far it's been called a gem among the slop, fascinating, and a few other things I don't care to mention. My interests are equally eclectic. However my professional focus, these days, is the intersection between human activity and the environment.

I also like to hike, garden, read, invent recipes and take the afternoon off. Not necessarily in that order. On my wish list of things to do is mastering the duck dive and taking a trip to the Great Bear Rainforest, or someplace else equally lush and wild. And completing at least one book proposal.

So if you need a writer to track the mating habits Rainforest elephants, kayak the Sea of Cortez, or even sip red wine in Rioja. Don't hesitate to contact me. I'm definitely up for any assignment that sounds like a challenge, or at least pays the rent.
