The treehuggers at TreeHugger saw right through this one. Safeway is now selling "organic water."
I find the last point especially amusing: "No Genetic Modification."

I call B.S. The tag is advertising Safeway's Organics line of generic products. The O water in the picture doesn't appear to be part of that brand. Some clerk or mischievous photog put the tag by the water for better effect. It's amusing but not a candidate for greenwashing...

It is good to be skeptical, but look at the sticker on the shelf. It says "O Water Lemon Lime" which does suggest they are trying to make a connection to the organic mystique. Unfortunately I am nowhere near a Safeway to check it out myself. Maybe someone who has access to Safeway can comment.

Yes, it's lemon lime flavored water. And neither the lemon, nor the limes have genetic modifications. Nor was either grown with pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics. Nor was any of these added to the water. So what's the problem?

Maybe others don't think it is funny. I think it is funny: the idea of "organic water" is ludicrous. But you are correct, once you add plant extracts, it starts to have meaning, if there is any chance of contamination with something like a pesticide. Seriously, though, it is hard to imagine why anyone would rationally care about genetic modification.

Organic water isn't crazy to me, it is just sad. The only people this is fooling are the ones who have more money than brains and are so bent on doing the right thing for "mother earth" that they are willing to leave their intelligence on the curb.
Did anyone ever ask these people where or how they think organic water is created/manufactured?
