Manufacturing Beauty

Category: Culture

This ad is awesome. In sixty seconds, you watch a pretty-but-ordinary looking woman become a supermodel. All it takes is a little makeup, some hairspray and a few seconds of photoshopping. Instead of selling something impossible to achieve, this commercial reveals the unreality of what we all want to look like. Well done, Dove.

When I see things like this I always remember the philosophy of the Dolly Parton character (The Beautician) in Steel Magnolias. She rejoiced in manufactured beauty and I think I agree - why not? Just because we make it doesn't make it any less real.

Great video. I saw something similar but with static images. More people should see this.. It would be great if they could find the money to run this as a publicity on major TV networks during prime time.

That is truly awesome. I wish my daughter had seen that several years ago. I particularly like the PhotoShopping, that shows how ordinary proportions are not considered really beautiful, and that you have to exaggerate neck and eyes to get the "classic" beauty...
