Why Don't Rich People Give Away More Money?

Category: Neuroscience
Posted on: March 1, 2007 12:49 PM, by Jonah Lehrer

Some people are really, really rich:

Take Oracle's founder, Lawrence J. Ellison. Mr. Ellison's net worth last year was around $16 billion. And it will probably be much bigger when the list comes out in a few weeks. With $16 billion and a 10 percent rate of return, Mr. Ellison would need to spend more than $30 million a week simply to keep from accumulating more money than he already has, to say nothing of trying to spend down the $16 billion itself.

He spent something like $100 million on his Japanese-style mansion in Woodside, Calif., making it among the more expensive private residences ever built. But that is only about three weeks worth of the interest he earns on his wealth. And a house doesn't actually spend down his net worth because it is an asset that can be resold. At least part of the $100 million is just a different way of saving.

Mr. Ellison would have to spend that $30 million a week -- $183,000 an hour -- on things that can't be resold, like parties or meals, just to avoid increasing his wealth.

Obviously, I can't begin to comprehend that kind of wealth. But Austin Goolsbee, in the Times, goes on to wonder why the super-rich don't give away more of their money, like Buffett. After all, there is no rational reason to have billions and billions of dollars. Nobody can spend that much money, and neither can your kids.

Goolsbee concludes that the answer is social status:

Perhaps they [the super-rich] get something different from having money -- clout, power, the ability to dominate an industry. Or perhaps these are just competitive people who care about their position compared with other people on the list.

They accumulate more so they can lord it over the other families who have less -- a bit like having enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world several times but making more to stay ahead of the other guy.

I'm sure that explanation is partially correct, although Buffett and Gates have gotten more "social-status" points for giving away their money than your average billionaire has gotten for being number 287 on the Forbes 400 list.

I think the simplest answer is that making money feels good. Economists assume that money is just a proxy for future utility, a fungible scrap of paper that we use to purchase pleasurable things. But money itself doesn't, or shouldn't, give us pleasure. The dopaminergic jolt of happiness comes from spending, not earning.

But money does make us happy. A dollar, or several billion dollars, is its own reward. That, at least, was the conclusion of a Neuron paper a few years back by Hans Breiter. He had people play simple gambles for cash inside an fMRI machine. If they won the gamble, they earned a few dollars. To Breiter's surprise, he found that making money activated the same set of dopamine-rich brain regions as cocaine and other addictive drugs.* That's why the filthy rich don't give away more of the money that they can't possibly spend: seeing all those zeroes in their bank account just feels too good.

*The good news is that giving away money is also rewarding. As Thoreau put it, "Goodness is the only investment that never fails."

I read a book a few years ago called A Natural History of the Rich that offered some insight into that question, including the social status points you can score for largesse.

It wasn't a scientific study or anything, but it was pretty entertaining.

I liked the quip about Warren Buffett after he announced most of his wealth would be going into the Gates Foundation:

"Warren Buffett is so rich he can't spend his money by himself - he has to hire Bill Gates to do it for him..."

I think a major reason is that people who wear really big salaries (CEOs for major companies, etc) are fairly constrained as far as time goes. Managing major charitable initiatives takes a bit of work - Gates didn't start his major philantrophic push until after he had handed over CEO to Ballmer and is currently transitioning Chief Software Architect to Ray Ozzie to spend more time working on it, and I'm guessing most people wouldn't hand over broad descretion in how to spend their money to others.

I think this misinterprets what wealth is. It's not like they have this money in dollars laying around the house. If they place it in investments, those investments allow companies the capital to invest in expansion which means expanding the number of jobs. If they place it in banks (which most don't do) they lower the cost of money making it cheaper for businesses to expand, again, expanding the number of jobs. If they build fantastic homes, who builds those homes? They are the craftsmen that are hired. Same thing goes for buying yachts or jets or what have you. When they do so, they are creating jobs for the middle class. A craftsman who builds yachts want more of the rich to buy more yachts. This allows him to provide the financial resources to support his family. If the money is given away rather than buying a yacht, he could lose his job for lack of work. If you give your money away that creates no jobs but is a simple one to one transfer.

to whome will help us

My husband is in the army,we wanted to get a house for us and our sons. But his credit is bad cause of his last marraige.NO one will give us the money to get a house that we can call our own.We dont make alot of money and he has been trying to get his credit right for sometime but still nothing or no one will help us.He has been deployed twice and he will be going back next year.Even if no one will help us i think seen he has been trying and also serving our country that a bank or someone would help us get into a home and give us a chance in life.I would like to help him out in some way but i cant cause i need to be home with our sons.I hate to ask around for help but i have had it with the banks and there telling us no we cant help you.We are good people and just want help on this or even advice if that.Anyways thanks.

My dad has been a hard working mechanical contractor more than half his life. He is honest and believes in a hard days work for honest pay. He and his crew were doing some work for a major cheese plant and things went wrong. Dad hired a lawyer but they were no match for the big corporate lawywers. That was the start of a downward spiral for business. My dad has always paid his bills. He had five bypass surgery a week ago, he is 67 years old and the house he lives in is falling sown around him. I am desperatly seeking help for my dad to fix his home.
Please help.
Thank you for your time and consideration

About 4 years ago my only son of 17 was shot and killed in a small town. Him and a friend was practicing bugling for elk before the hunting season was opened. They were on private land, and it was getting dark and they were walking back to the road. A pick-up pulled up and a person got out crossed under the no tresspassing sign and fired a shot into the dark and struck my son in the chest. We live on the Nez Perce reservation he was a native american hunting. I did not realize they could hunt at night or anytime of the year. He was on two different kinds of drugs so I don't know if that is what made him see a movement or not. This would of been his third elk in less than two weeks I often wonder why it was so important to shoot at something you can't see. I have two daughters at the time who were 13 and 16 which did't deseve to have to go through this at such a young age. I have a wonderful husband who works hard My son and him did alot together so he lost not only a son but also a bedt friend. Me being the mother tried to help them all I put myself and all my feelings on the back burner. I tried to make everybody not have to worry about nothing my husband was in no shape to deal with the everyday life of bills I tried hard to keep up on all of them so he did not have to worry. I started using my credit card to pay bills and before I even knew it up around 18,000.00 it credit card debt. The sad thing is my husband knows nothing about it. Things are comming around for my family as well as to be expected all of them but me I can't tell my husband what I have done I just got him to where he is a little more happier I never want to see that sad in eyes ever again I'm losing my hair, my teeth, I have high blood pressure my cholesterole is 296 all due from stress I work as a waitress I keep up on all my credit card bills but I can't pay enough to get anywhere The stress is acutually killing me, I just want to wake up one morning and feel like I want to live. To be able to look at my family with no guilt. I never meant for this to happen. If somebody could please help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much my e-mail address is deanna_thomason@hotmail.com

I believe that what you have is what you have worked for unless it is inherited. I don't have much, but I think the Lord gives me what he thinks I can handle. I'm not saying I don't want more, I'm just saying I don't need anymore and that is a blessing. If asked what I could use, MR. GOVERNMENT. It would be health insurance.( My gov. isn't working for me) You go gitters, more power to you and keep on gittin it. You deserve it I'm sure. I don't want nothing, Isn't that refreshing?

Homeless people are stuck at the so called bottom because of money. There is alot of un occupied land that could be used to grow a garden, and live off the land. But without money you can't possibly use the land that isn't being used. Kind of like how the natives got pushed out of the Southwestern states and put on reserves, and still the land just sits there un occupied as ever has been. Only taken for greed, so the already rich could have just little more. Much the same way people are stuck in cities to fuel the consumerism of today's society. Money is simply a control tool used to keep the rich in power. This is why they don't give it away. Without it people could do as they please and live off the land.

If you give even a little money to a charity, your name is passed around to other charities, and soon you're receiving dozens of requests.

If you're rich, you're the target of even more charities and scammers. It takes too much time, too much effort to wade through them.

It would be nice to see someone walk up to my dad and just say here this is for your dreams to come true.If my dad ever finds out I wrote this he would be so mad. But we know this wont happen, the rich from what I see could care less, even when you work for them its oh thats to much. I just dont know how my dad keeps working for them.

I have a daughter that was hurt in a bad accident 19 years ago. Her home was damaged bad during hurricane Rita and we need funds to repair the house so she can have a roof over her head. She gets about $900 disability and I am on social security and we do not have any means to get funds to fix the house. It is sad to say that she is not a minority other than when it comes tolittle money and for some reason you do not qualify for help from FEMA or other government programs is you are a white American. WE could use about $30,000 and we would find some way to repay the loan should you help us. Thanks Grace

I have a proposition for any rich people that want to make a difference... I have a sad story as do most of the others here but I will keep it to myself.. I will share it with any respondents that are interested.. I suggest that a wealthy philanthropist invest in buying an existing business that I will run and own. This creates / saves jobs, helps an individual become financially secure and helps him help others. Part of the terms can be that once successful I would do the same for another person based on the same agreement. And so on, for as long as the benefactors were profitable. Rather than a blind one time donation to a charity with high overhead and costs. You can help someone and see the results directly. This also makes their grant live on and multiply. It's a no lose situation. If the business fails it's a write-off... which is good for the investor, if it flourishes they not only help me but also future people..either way the investor wins.. Liability insurance would be required to protect the investor.. No risk involved not even the original donation. There are plenty of businesses available for sale some for even less than 250000. I have put myself through college at night while working I earned a business management degree, and have 30k in student loans to prove it.. so the chances of success are greatly increased.. Interested persons please contact me at n2deepagain@msn.com let's see what happens..

I have had a most terrible life and would like for someone to give to me "just to make it all better". I was brutily abused when I was a child, one of 7 children, and to get away from home I got pregnant at 17,which backfired real bad because my ex-husband turned out to be a wife beater. I came away from their battered and brused as he broke my nose, cracked 3 ribs, gave me a concusion and many other injuries. So,their I am trying to raise my son and all alone (no Family help, surprise)At the tender age of 22 I was a divorced helpless mess. I just want some good to come from the horrific life that was bestowed upon me. Both my mom and stepdad where alcolics and drug abusers. Please find in your heart to give some peace on earth.

I see many people with so much heartache,i wish i could wipe away all their tears. I know about heartache too but after reading some post on here mine seem unimportant. My biggest wish would be to face living in my own home since my husband died. I moved away and struggle with such good memories and the inability to face life without him. money would help but no amount would stop the heartache of losing him. i rented my home in an attempt to keep it and i hear it is becoming a crack house. I feel my husband would be ashamed of me for how i've let things become.

HI my name is Connie, I am a single mother of five boys. I never intended my life to be this way, but I give God praise. I believe that someone is going to bless me financially because I have never exploited website in this type of manner before. I am in need of a new vehicle and I am in need of someone to pay off all my debt. The amount that I owe in debt is less than 30,000. I am not lazy and I have worked all my life, but due to unfortunate events I have had some setbacks. Hear God I pray and send me a email if He (God) has spoken to you. This is not a scam and I am not begging, I am asking like God led me to do.

Me and my family have had a very tramatic past two years. I first lost my son 2 years ago this week on Oct. 7th 2006 to a motorcycle accident. I felt my life was over. Then I lost my dad and two uncles. I have not been able to go back to work. I would love to have the money to pay my house off so I could then add onto my house so my mother could move in so I could help her. She needs me and I need her too. Please someone out there listen and help. I have worked all my life and now I can't and need help. Someone hear my prayer.

No, its nobbodys fault but mine that i am in the sittuation that i am in . And the main thing is that I can admit to it and live with it . But for my children and i to be in need and here in the United States and for nobody to help us with food, shelter, or clothes is sad. Exspecially when so many people are rich and have so much money that they would not be able to spend in their life time and they cant give. I work full time but i still struggle. And so many people worry about people are just out to get what they can for free. But what if they really need it? Greed runs the world. Do something for a person really in need without wanting attention from the world or any thing in return. My children and I need help. Although with GOD on our side I believe we will be ok. But if Anyone could help us please do so.540-238-9416

Hello, I was hospitalized in August of 2007 with a rare but severe stomach condition. I was in the hospital for six months, and physical therapy for five months after. They had me on paralytics so I had to learn how to walk again. The doctors did not think that I was going to live. They even told my family to pull the plug at one point, because I was that bad off. Please help me? I was on life support. My family refused to pull the plug, and by a miracle, I came out of it all alive. I did have medical insurance at the time, but just being in ICU alone costs thousands upon thousands a night. Ever since June I have tried every avenue possible to reduce this debt, it is in the millions of dollars. Other things fell behind as well, such as my house payments and a few other bills. Everyone will settle with me for a total of $135,000. If there are very wealthy people that read this website, and could be of any help, I am not asking for all of this kind of money from one person. It would be great if one person was that kind, but that is asking too much. I know that there are a lot of millionaires in this world, and if I could just get 270 of them to give me $500 then I could pay this entire debt off. I know that to a very wealthy individual $500 is not a lot of money. I mean, if anyone wants to give more than that, then feel free to do so, but I know that there have got to be 270 very wealthy individuals out there who could give me this money without thinking a thing about it. Right now I am being threatened to be sued, I could lose my car, home, etc....that I worked very hard for before I became sick. And my story is 100% true, I have the pictures to prove when I was on a breathing machine to keep me alive. I am just an average, hard working American who wants to get out of debt and move on with my life. All I need to do is find around 270 people to help me. I know that there are that many wealthy Americans in my own home town, let alone this entire country and world. It may sound like a lot of people, but trust me it isn't. If anyone can help me please email me at lookingforkindness@gmail.com. I can show you pictures of me, and when I was extremely ill. Thanks to anyone who is willing to help.

Hello to whom ever this may get to:
I have lost about 32 months of work since 2002. Since 9/11 like many folks we all have suffered great losses. I was off for more then 8 months alone in 2002 and lost 5 months in 2003. Since then it has been 4 months here and 5 months here etc...
I have been laid off since July of 2008 to now(Doesnt look like I am going back to soon) Yes I am a union guy and I make good money when I do work but this is the worst in my 23 years in the trade.(electrician) I have lost over 145,000.00 dollars in wages and well you know the mortgage still comes in with utilities etc....
I am humbling myself at this time I am behind on all bills mortgage included. For the 1st time in my life I am going to apply for food stamps, heat and power help and I am in dire need to get ahead.
We have fostered Great Danes (great Dane rescue inc) for almost four years now, we give to them. Many people give them away, have them put down, take them to animal control etc. We have fostered over forty of these wonderful dogs and yes they ll have been adopted out to great homes.
We give to them what we can and yes when it is good it is good, but right now I am way behind in all billls.
I am not asking for 145 thousand dollars from anyone ,but you know ten thousand dollars would catch us up at least for a month or 2 till I get back to work.
I feel like we have given to this organization and other charities as we have done in the past, Maybe this time some one can give to us.
To a billionaire ten thousand dollars is like 2 dollars to us and I have humbled myself for the 1st time in 52 years of life.
It is better to give then to receive I know I have done this for years
TY Pennington you go Boy what you and ABC and Disney does for these folks is absolutley woderful..
Thanks and God Bless

Wats goin on here, man u guys got to be contented with what u have, go down to Africa to places like somalia and c for urselves or better still y do u not relocate sell all ur stuff and move to a little nation in Africa and you will make it better, cos things are cheaper and life is less stressful than an indebted system like in the states, last time I went there it was soo cool and the girls there got booty damn they loved me. Thinkin If the recession hits too hard guys just follow my advise and relocate it will go better if you invest there and you will even get better paid jobs there than you get in the states. Trust me I assure you.

You are saying that know one here wants to help our own.
Why aren't you there or staying there if it is so great.
Go there , stay there I do not need you to tell me to move out of the greatest nation in the world. I have seen the others I LIKE IT HERE

I may not have anything eye catching or different, I just have my stroy about who I am and why I am struggling to make it. My name is Niki and i am twenty six and Iam currently a stylist a salon. Two years ago i decided to move out of my dad's home because he had remarried and I wanted them to be able to enjoy their life together. Little did I know that moving out on my own would be a rude awaking.I had quit my aunts salon upon moving out because it was a poisonis enviornment I could not grow in. My aunt had become a minupulating alcoholic that I could no longer work along side. I thought I would be better off starting a new in a friends condo with a new job.I choose this path to help better my life but in time it hasn't exactly worked out that way. I had some money saved to live on and because I started at a much nicer salon I thought I'd get by ok. I ran through my savings very fast with rent, food, gas and such. I tried donateing my eggs to help others and also to help me out finachially. Three days before the extraction and after i have been on med.'s for almost three weeks they cancelled my extraction. The doctors did not give me a correct amount of med.s for my body and I was not able to donate. Therefore I did not recieve the sum I had relied on, and that couple could not recieve my eggs to start their family.I live a pretty simple life these days and have to live within my means to survive. Realisticly a stylist has to put in at least three years to build a strong clientel to make money and not just pay bills. I had only put in one year there by the time I was gaining clients, but not yet enough to really get anywhere. My credit cards then sky rocketed to stay afloat and sadly my dad had to help bail me out with that debt. I now live with my boyfriend and am currently two years into my new job. I have a decent clientel and love what I do, but with such a recession my clients are feeling it and cutting back. I struggle to pay my utilities, gas, pay off credit cars, and forget the nice things in life cause I need to eat. As if things couldn't have happend at a worse time, my car was recently totalled when a chick ran a red light and hit me. I had worked hard for the only nice thing I owned and it's sad it was only two years old and I had only five more grand to pay it off. So currently I am still trying to build and am doing the best I really can at work. Until the economy get's better people are not going to be flying into my salon. I used to live a great life but now I am just thankful I even have a job and am really just trying to do the best that I can. I am one of the most out going and giving peole anyone has ever met my mom tells me but it seems like god's really testing me these day's. I've heard that god put's these problems on people like me cause he knows were strong enough to take it. These days though...I just don't know. So that's my story and as good as it get's.I'm just another women out there that a lot of crappy things have happen to and I'm just trying to get by. I turn my back on no one and could greatly use someonelse's help for a change. Really any dollar amount is greatly appreciated in my eyes. Most important I have to get a new car and am trying not to seek my dad's help yet again. If you would like me to send you picures of my car just ask.If you feel I am worth a hand out than I openly accept what you have to offer and say thanks from the bottom of my heart.-Niki

To spend $180,000.00 in one hour...that is a life time of happiness for me, my husband and our daughter. We are struggling medically, emotionally and financially just to get by every week. I'm from Eastern Canada, winters are bad and all winter we had to make judgment calls of either paying for our fuel or buying grocery. There are days I cannot send my daughter to school because I have no lunch or money for her. It breaks my heart to see her dream about buying new pair of jeans or the latest shoes or winter jacket. Because we have to tell her we have to pay this months morgage, electric, fuel and food...and if I can I'll try my best to get her shoes. She missed out on a school trip to Europe simply because we couldn't even afford a $150.00 down payment, let along the rest of the $1000.00. Now that I suffered a heart attack last October of 2008 and my husband having 2 heart attacks in March of 2009, we are just lost in bills. Mr. Lawerence Ellison I would never wish anyone what we are going through, I wouldn't wish this on you, to the Gates, the Buffets, the Oprah Winfery's out there. But if you have heart help these people who are in a situation like mine...$180,000.00 may not mean anything to you in an hour, but that means the world to me and my family forever. Paying off the house and making a bedroom and getting a bedroom set for my daughter, a full tank of oil, electric bill paid off until we catch up on old bills, even a good used car. The good Lord blessed you with your talent to become a successful individual and I wish you all the best with you and your family. I'm not sure if you will get to read this or anyone in your status, but it was nice to let my thoughts flow out here. And to anyone who is out there who shares my thoughts and dreams, God Bless You and I Pray You Will Be Blessed.

I am making this request on behalf of 3 truly remarkable people; my husband and his parents. After 18 yrs of dedicated hard work, my husband was wrongfully terminated from his job on Christmas Eve 2008 for failure to change an oil filter (they say). He was devastated as he has worked since he was 14 (he is 40 now), and didn't know what he would do from here. This man has been my rock, and at the age of 34 when I suddenly became paralyzed from the chest down this man took care of me and brought me back from the brink of death. Never once did he complain when he had to go to work at 5am, come home at 1pm, clean, cook, feed, clothe and bathe me, take me to doctors and specialist, put together and tear down an electric wheelchair weighing about 200 lbs, pick the 4 children up from school, help with home work, take them to all of their activities, and stay up through the wee hours with me as I battled the pain in my body, then start the day over again. There is so much more I could say about my high school sweetheart, but there isn't enough paper in the world. Due to my illness we lost everything we worked so hard for, including our home we had built 6yrs prior, our good credit rating (730's to 500's) and my husband's 401k that we used trying to save our home. I want to do something wonderful for him, but can't afford it. I feel this man is so deserving of many things, as he does do much for everyone. His dream is to own a bar-b-que catering truck so he can run his own business. This dream seems like it is so far out of reach now. Trucks cost anywhere from $28,000 up plus start up costs. We don't like asking for handouts, and he has no idea I'm writing you, but I want this so bad for him. He is a remarkable cook, and everyone calls on him to cater. If I could get $31,000 to help him get his truck, I know that he will feel like he has been touched by an angel. The other request is for my in laws. They are the GREATEST! My father-in-law is an Elder (Minister) in the Pentecostal, Church of God In Christ. This couple has touched so many lives, and blessed so many people. They are the most selfless people I have ever met. They will take anyone in, and help them any way they can. They truly practice what they preach. They have 8 children, my husband their oldest, and they raised them superbly. They are some of the most respectful, loving people I have ever met. They are all saved and in church, and don't fit the "stereotype" of a pk (preacher's kid). My f-i-l's dream is to build a rec center at or near our church where children can come after school for tutoring, music lessons (instrumental & vocal), and to learn computer skills. The cost for this may be $25,000 to $50,000. I would like to be able to get them the full amount, but will accept any amount in between. I also request $6,000 so all of my husbands’ siblings and parents could take a trip together. My m-i-l & f-i-l have dreamed that they could get all their children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren together for a family trip. If you can make any of this happen I would be overly grateful. These 3 people deserve so much more. Thank you, and best regards

Dear Sirs: I have worked hard all my life so I could buy a home. I'am 51 now and I rented uptill 2006 when I finely purchased the home that my uncle built in 1965, I spent alot of time in this house as a kid, and it is what I always wanted. My Son and I are selfemployed carpenters we work in schools, collage and factories installing lockers, basketball-backstops, casework and folding blechers. Things were going ok till the bottom fell out of the economy at the end of 2007, we can't get any work now to save us!! Being selfemployed we can't get any help with money or food. My house is in foreclosure, I lost my car, I'am behind on my truck payments, if I lose the truck we will be out of business, I have to go to the job sites to work, the truck hauls our tools. I can't stand to lose my home, it has been my goal in life. My Son still is at home with my wife and I, and we have one dog one cat and 14 ferrets, if we lose the home where do we all go? Any help that could be sent would be a loan!! We work hard when we have work and would pay you back!! We are not looking for a handout just to be able to live without some bank trying to take your life away. THANK YOU!! and God Bless us all.

I am a single mom of two sons. My ex-husband has multiple medical issues, which contributed to him being addicted to narcotics. He spent all his money on pain killers with no regard to his family or our home. he lost his job, we lost our home that I put my heart and soul into. He has put us in a bad credit standing. I cannot be approved for a loan to purchase a home for my sons and I. I just want a stable, normal life for my kids. I will legally make a contract to repay for any loan so that I can purchase a small home. I am not a material person and love fixing things up, so anything at all that anyone can offer, I would be forever grateful. Please consider helping us have a normal life and a home free of drugs.

I have had my daughter in Catholic schools since 3rd grade and it is becoming very difficult for me to continue to pay. My daughter attends a Catholic high school in Chicago. My daughter likes the school and wants to continue. I also do not want to keep changing schools on her.

I have done and will still do anything and everything as long as it is legal, moral and ethical to keep my daughter in the Catholic school. I owe $36,000 in private school loans from Sallie Mae from the past two years for the high school. Part of this loan amount is for my son who was also in the Catholic high school. I have to pay $500 a month for the next ten years and it is very difficult to pay this amount and have an additional amount added on for this upcoming year and the year after. I also owe $47,000 in my own student loans. I only make about $36,000 a year and I cannot receive any child support. I am working two other part time jobs, but it is just not enough. I am trying to catch up on my private loan payments so I can reapply for another private loan so she can go to the school this upcoming year and now catching up means it is interfering with my rent payment.

I am writing to you to find out if there is anyone out there with extra money and they want to donate it to a good cause. I will truly appreciate any assistance you can provide that I know will result in the betterment of my beloved children.

Hi. I am a 53 year old woman on disibility. I take alot of medicine, and I have 5 children, so all of my money goes to that. My husband has a wonderful job and takes care of our bills. I have a daughter who needs help. She is raising 3 beautiful boys on her own. One of them is blind and she had to pick up and move so he could go to a school for the blind. I just can't help her, and she needs a home to raise those 3 boys in. My grandson will always have to attend this school, so they need a home, so he will always have a place to live. She does get help from the state, but they get alot less than their needs. I know we can get help with the down payment, but she won't be able to make monthly payments. Please help me get a home for my beautiful grandchildren. I can tell you, this will put a big smile on their faces! Thank you, and may God bless you and your families, and return your money tenfold.

I have never written a letter like this in my life. In fact, I wouldn't be writing it now if desperation were not a big factor for me.

I pray you will, at the very least, read and acknowledge my letter.

Owensboro is a town that large parts of it seem to die a little more everyday. The one thing it does have going for it are the colleges.

I have lived here about two years, the reason I am here is for school. The whole time that I have been here I have been looking for work. There are no jobs here. I finally found a job two weeks ago, but the company I am working for is not in KY, it's in Portland, Oregon and I work for them virtually.

I am so sorry to bother you with this request, I'm just so desperate. All my life the only thing I liked about myself, physically, was my smile.

I am 53 yeares old and in the past year I have battled cancer and hopefully won, taken my GED & scored in the top eight percent of the country, started college and finished my first semester with a 3.75 GPA. I knew I was in dire need of dental work, but in KY there are no avenues to help you get the dental work done. I know, I've tried and tried. I am on the waiting list for Donated Dental Services and have been for almost a year.

During the fall semester, which was my second, a tooth, under my bridge came out and my bridge will come out any day. The fillings in my two front teeth fell out and I've suffered an infection on and off for 8 months now. Sometimes the pain is unbearable. There are no resources for the kind of help I need and I can't stand the thought of being in public, looking as I do. So I withdrew from college and I have barely left my apartment since the beginning of January. I have become more and more depressed as time has passed and more reclusive. I search everyday for help and there is none.

Even though I have suffered great hardships all my life and I am all alone, I still participate in the random acts of kindness philosophy. And since I saw the movie Pay It Forward, knew that is the way I wanted to conduct my life. I am not trying to toot my own horn, I would just like to help you understand what kind of person I strive to be everyday.

if you will please help me, when I finish school I will work for you or go to work elsewhere and repay you triplefold. I'm even willing to change my major in school so when I graduate it would be in a profession that would directly benefit your business. I'd be happy doing so! As it stands right now ... I have no quality of life and it gets worse everyday, so you see changing my major would not matter.

I realize you get dozens of letters like this and if you dismiss mine I will understand. But, if you do help me, you will be saving my life. Literally!

I am all alone in this world, not even a soul to talk too. I can not even stand to look in the mirror and at this point see no reason to go on. I cry all the time, though it does no good. And I am so tired of struggling just to stay alive.

"Please, someone help me!" Please....

Thank you so much for taking the time to read it.

To Whom it may concern;

Your article was very interesting. I beleive it is part true. However I think people's circumstances and the choices they make also have something to do with how much money they have. Not to say that rich people don't have problems because I beleive they do. But choosing to pay a certain bill or helping your children is not something they have to do. I also realize that some people are self made millionaires and that they worked hard to get there and also gave up a lot on their way. With that said I to am going to be one of the many that I have noticed asked for help. I am in dire need of financial assistance. I am facing a foreclousure and also my car is going to be reposessed. I work very hard and I am gratefull that I have a job. My children however do not two of my children have lost their jobs and cannot seem to find work. I am supporting the entire household. This all came about after 2008. I was doing financially o k till around then, I had one son in a Tech. School and another getting braces I had refinanced the house and received a second mortgage. I was still o k. My son's school was being paid for by a parent plus loan not coming due till he graduated. Well we figured he could pay the loan when he came out of school an got a job. (didn't happen) Who new the bottom was going to fall out on every thing. This is a vey hard letter to write because of my pride and integrety but I don't know where else to turn. You have my e-mail address and my name,if you contact me I will give you my phone # and any other information you want. I do not feel comfortable putting all the personal info out in public. Thank you for your time, I hope to hear from you.

Honestly, many of the super rich do give away large portions of their wealth to charities that badly need it. Ask anybody who complains about the rich needing to give away their wealth; When was the last time they have given anything to charity? (I have asked several people) Blank stares and rants about how hard it is follows. Perhaps before you get crazy about someones personal belongings i.e. THEIR wealth, we should follow there lead and help out your local charities. Don't have a job? No money? Offer to volunteer your time. So save you energy from ranting about the rich and really do something that can make an impact on your community.
Best of life to all of you.
