I'm Not There

Posted on: November 21, 2007 10:20 AM, by Jonah Lehrer

I've been trying really hard not to get excited about I'm Not There, in case it turned out to be a self-indulgent disaster. But early reviews suggest that it's actually rather compelling. That's great news, because I already love the soundtrack. In no particular order, my favorite tracks include:

Ring Them Bells, by Sufjan Stevens
Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again, by Cat Power
Simple Twist of Fate, by Jeff Tweedy
Going to Acapulco, by Calexico and Jim James
Knockin' on Heaven's Door, by Antony and the Johnsons

Here's my question: What are your dream pairings for Dylan covers? I'd like to see Bright Eyes tackle "It Ain't Me Babe" or "It's Alright Ma". Bruce could take "Tangled Up in Blue," which would fit nicely on Tunnel of Love. I could go on and on...

In other music news, I just discovered the fantastic Prince cover of "A Case of You". Imagine Joni Mitchell fused with Al Green.

HUGE Bright Eyes fan here, so I totally agree with you. There's this great exhibit at MCA Chicago on art and rock and roll right now that's been getting me pumped for I'm Not There, as well.

Tim O'Brien did a great album of Dylan covers (Red on Blonde), of which the best tracks are easily the '80s Dylan songs nobody listens to. It's one of my favorite CDs, if you like, or at least don't hate, bluegrass.

I desperately want to hear Joanna Newsom cover "Masters of War." I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Leonard Cohen doing "Lay Lady Lay." Ethel Merman covering "Idiot Wind."

It's beautiful. A Case of You is one of the redeeming tracks on that tribute album.

I don't know if it counts because he's actually done it a few times before, but Eddie Vedder does a mean "Masters of War," both with or without the rest of the band. There's also a guy by the name of Terry Allen out of Lubbock that I think would hit a Dylan tune out of the park, but a single song doesn't come to mind immediately.
