A modest drive from Charlottesville lies Fredericksburg, VA. Whitman enthusiasts may be interested in visiting Chatham Manor, an 19th century colonial manor house overlooking the Rappahannock River. Known as Lacy House during the early years of the Civil War, the manor was taken as a Union outpost. Following the battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, Whitman left Brooklyn in search of his brother, whose name had appeared on a roster of those wounded. Whitman's brief stay at Lacy House tending to injured soldiers launched his career as a field nurse. The site has been well cared for and preserved. There is something to walking the same ground as Whitman. Beautiful, majestic, bittersweet, poignant.

Jonah and author David Kirby gave insightful presentations on the creative process, answered questions and signed books at the Virginia Festival of the Book yesterday in Charlottsville. There was someone taping and I was told it would be possible to listen to the talks at the website. So far I don't see them posted so maybe we have to wait til the Festival ends on Sunday. Click on "About VA Book!" at the website for the archives. I imagine that's where they will be. Thank you Jonah!
