Craig is temporarily a post-doctoral fellow at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute who is looking for a permanent position. He spends most of his time balancing his overwhelming geekdom with normalcy so he can function in the real world. Luckily his wife likes his geekiness.
Peter Etnoyer is a Graduate Research Associate at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He studies deep corals and ocean fronts, and he loves to be on the water.
Kevin Zelnio is a Graduate Student Researcher at Penn State studying the ecology of hydrothermal vent and methane seep communities. He raises awareness of the plight of the spineless through folk music.
Last year DSN, although not a Sb'ling, participated in the Donor's Choose Campaign. Various bloggers here at Sb, with the help of our readers, raised money for classrooms across the US. DonorsChoose is an organization that helps teachers fund classroom projects and other student learning experiences. DSN raised over $500 dollars last year to send children from a southern California school on a field trip to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. You can catch read about this on today's other post.
Given the success of last year, DSN is again sponsoring a challenge to raise money. This year we need $1,100 to fund three marine-related projects. I get numerous requests asking how people can save the deep sea. Here it is..instill in children passion and stewardship for marine habitats. How do you do that? Fund projects in the classroom! Children who are informed and mindful, protect and conserve. Now lets all join hands and sing We Are the World! The three projects we are looking to fund...
- 2nd Grade Class at Charter School of Morgan Hill, California: Currently there are no textbooks available for an ocean unit in this project-based learning school. The classroom needs 5 copies each of 8 book titles to share among 3 second grade classrooms.
- Berea High School in Greenville, South Carolina: The biology and marine sciences classes in this low income district (50%) needs safety glasses. In the words of their teacher, "My current dilemma is that my students keep complaining that they can't see well out of their current safety glasses. The scratches and discoloration over the years have caused my students to make these complaints. It is definitely time for some new safety glasses. We do a lot of fun laboratories and I hate to think that they are not enjoying the labs as much due to poor safety glasses." We are looking to fund 30 pairs of safety glasses.
- Croatan High School in Newport, North Carolina: The school is located next to Bogue Sound on the Atlantic Ocean. The teacher wants to engage the class with a project addressing how rapid change and development affects water quality around the community. We are looking to fund water testing kits and other supplies to get this project off the ground
