We were out walking the dog at Malabar Bay and saw some dolphins. They're not an unusual sight in the ocean off Sydney but I've never seen them this close before -- you could almost reach out and touch...

We were out walking the dog at Malabar Bay and saw some dolphins. They're not an unusual sight in the ocean off Sydney but I've never seen them this close before -- you could almost reach out and touch them. There were about a dozen of them and they were splashing around for about half an hour. More pictures and a video below the fold.
I didn't have a telephoto lens -- these were taken with my little Ixus 55. Fortunately they were really close.

What kind of dolphins? I work beside a large bay of the Gulf of Mexico where we are visited by bottle-nosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) on a daily basis. We see manatees too. The most fun sightings are the moms with their little tackers. Not fun: the manatees with huge prop scars on their backs and pieces of their tails whacked off. Stokes my misanthropy.

Bottle-nosed dolphins, I think. But I'm no dolphin expert.

I think those are just examples of junk dolphins. Also "about a dozen" is a hopelessly vague estimate -- there might only have been one.
