Monckton and the APS

Catherine Brahic, at the New Scientist enviromental blog has more on Monkcton and the APS:

[Al Saperstein, an editor of Physics and Society,] stressed that that the article was not sent to anyone for peer-reviewing. Saperstein himself edited it. "I'm a little ticked off that some people have claimed that this was peer-reviewed," he said. "It was not." ...

In April, the newsletter ran an article by retired nuclear physicist Gerald Marsh. Marsh argued that solar variations play a major role in the Earth's climate, one which overrides human emissions of greenhouse gases. ...

The editors put out a request for articles arguing "both sides of the debate." They also asked Gerald Marsh to recommend authors who might contribute a piece arguing against the IPCC.

Marsh gave five names, and the editors contacted all five. Monckton was the only one to respond. ...

[Saperstein] regrets the statement at the front of the newsletter which reads "There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion".

"It is clear that we made one error in my colleague's introduction. In retrospect, the word 'considerable' should have been dropped."

BigCityLib highlighted Marsh on Monday the 21st. I added some more detail, as it is clear that Marsh has run off into serious denialist leanings, with OpEds, etc, for several years, and has published lots of pieces in FPS. [Hence, Larry Gould may have been delighted to see Monckton's piece appear, but didn't seem to have been involved in making it happen, contrary to my earlier speculations.]

What on earth did Catherine Brahic do to deserve the ranting, poo-flinging idiots infesting the comments thread on that article?

Regards Luke

Mashey: yes, the smoking gun now appears to be in Marsh's hands but I'm sure you're right that Gould is happy. Or jealous. Probably both.

Luke- she wrote about climate change in an arena where moronic denialists roam free.

Luke, not only that, but try Google searching for mentions elsewhere of the article that will draw it to the attention of those who won't need to read it before they critique it and her.

(Key Deltoid Feature thanks to Hank's gentle prodding).

Uhhh, Luke was complaining about denialist idiocy in the comments section there, Dano, not acting like one himself.

Yup. I've urged them to enable killfile over there before. Hope they do.

Hmmm. OK, then: [unkill].

I slept well last night with the extra glass of nightcap.

Apologies.

Best,

I posted a list of URLs of Marsh's writings on climate over at RealClimate.

If anyone thinks that Catherine did a nice job on this, consider my advice about the press, here in Deltoid, specifically:

A2. If a reporter writes an insightful story, let them know that also, since most of the time, they get nothing but complaints.
