What is Jim Salinger doing now??
I remember he was sacked for speaking to a TV company without permission, was it last year??

One of the general problems highlighted by this episode is that there is a constituency out there (like resident troll sunspot for example) who neither can nor want to understand the science.

The very fact that (in this case) the NZ Charity Status Cranks go through the motions of ‘challenging’ the official record is the same as doing so successfully even though they have pitifully and wholly failed.

It’s like there’s an alternate Wattsian universe we’re co-existing with.

    > It’s like there’s an alternate Wattsian universe we’re co-existing with.

Yes, there is. And the more evidence and science you lay out in front of it, the higher and stronger the walls become.

    Read this and weep:

    * The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has projected that the United States will lead the world into catastrophic global warming over the next twenty five years, with “…rapid sea level rise, extreme famine, desertification, and ecological collapse on land and sea.” http://www.grist.org/article/2010-12-21-eia-projects-climate-catastrophe

I’m struggling to doubt that is true. There are too many morons, too many liars, too many delusional, Dunning-Kruger-afflicted pompous shitwits who are going to drag the rest of us over the precipice. If someone can persuade me otherwise, I’d be very grateful.

    Leyland’s final comment is wonderful:
“If NIWA can’t get it right, we will”

    Which translates to:
“If NIWA’s public and detailed reanalysis still shows the same warming, which it does, we will re-analyse and toy with the data until we can get it to show what we want, which is no warming”.

Paul UK: Jim S is alive and well, currently spending the holiday season in Hobart with his partner. Since leaving NIWA he has been based at Auckland University, and continues to work on climate issues.

I never cease to be amazed by the lengths that those who deny global warming and its causes will go to “prove” their position. The best they can do is distort and misrepresent the work of others and flee in terror from anything resembling peer review. That alone should make any sane person dismissive of their views.

This phenomenon leads me to postulate the existence of quantum chromodenynamics, wherein reality quarks and trope quacks are bound by a strong moronic interaction. Where the distance between reality and trope increases, the strength of the force attempting to bind reality quarks to trope quacks increases, stressing the cherry-colour field. When the field’s energy threshold is passed, new trope quacks spontaneously materialise to bind with the old trope quacks that are being separated from reality, forming new moron particles in the moronisation process inherent in cherry-colour confinement.

The frustrating corollary from my quantum chromodenynamic model of denialism is that the more energy is invested in attempting to separate trope from reality, the more tropes and morons will apparate…

Odd! I was “sure” it looked OK in preview.

    Brenard J –
Thank you for the delightful quantum analogy. I went to Gareth’s blog, prior to reading the comments here and found it there. Your quark to quack transposition really nailed it for me. We “alarmists” appear to have a monopoly on humor, the poor deniers are left with the dregs – derision. I used to rate Language Log as having the top laughs per post score. With your quantum chromodenynamics and chek’s “alternate Wattsian universe” and P. Lewis’ “Try this: It’s the Stupid Trend” Deltoid has outdone them. Humor, in the end, may be the most effective response to the “trope quacks”

    Bill and Bill.

Thank you. I had a snigger myself, which may say something about me – after all, isn’t there a trope about folk who laugh at there own jokes? ;-)

And Merry Christmas everyone. Best wishes for a happy and safe festive season.

    there their…

Sheesh. Too many flashing lights on the neighbours’ Christmas trees.

Still, it’s a good opportunity to include salutations to all of those folk those celebrating instead Saturnalia, Yule, and/or all of the other peri-solstice festivals, and who might have felt excluded by my Christmas wishes!

Thanks for the quantum lesson. Deeply enjoyed it.
