Creationism Seminar at Dover High School

This is funny. Repent America - the same organization whose leaders were arrested in Philadelphia for protesting a gay pride event (the charges were eventually dropped, and I believe rightly so) - has rented out the Dover High School auditorium to hold a creationism seminar and "teach the truth about God's creation." But remember, this has nothing to do with religion, all evidence to the contrary. They do, of course, have a legal right to rent the facilities for this purpose.

But here's the funny part - apparently they asked the Dover school board - the new board, the ones who rescinded the ID policy - to waive the usual fees for renting the auditorium. That request was rejected. But you gotta admire the chutzpah. And I like what Pat Hayes had to say about it:

Dover, then, is a logical destination, although the good folks of Repent America might be well advised to check first with Pat Robertson to learn whether or not God has scheduled his planned retribution for that secular Sodom sometime around the middle of March.

Good line. Wish I'd thought of it first.

Pat Hayes bit reminds me of what Steven Colbert asked Nina Totenberg the other night about consulting with Pat Robertson about possible future Supreme Court openings. She said that she didn't feel Pat R's channelling was all that reliable, and that she had no capacity to interview god to verify the facts and statements.

Pat Hayes has a no nonesense approch to things. Here he mentions one of our favorite nudnicks, Utah State Sen Buttars:

According to religious extremists like Buttars, anyone who isn't a biblical literalist is, by definition, an atheist. Although public opinion polls consistently show that non-believers are a tiny minority of the population in this country, the fundamentalist re-definition of atheism has turned us, overnight, into an overwhelming majority.

So... If one believes in the God of reality and not the God of Biblical mythology, one is an atheist? Imagine that!
