God's Latest Punishment

There's never any shortage of people ready to claim that the latest disaster or problem is God's punishment on us for this or that. Here's the latest, brought to my attention by Jason Kuznicki.

An outbreak of deadly bird flu in Israel is God's punishment for calls in election ads to legalize gay marriages, according to Rabbi David Basri, a prominent sage preaching Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism.

"The Bible says that God punishes depravity first through plagues against animals and then in people," Basri said in a religious edict quoted by his son.

Basri said he hoped the deaths of hundreds of thousands of turkeys and chickens would help atone for what he called the sins of left-wing Israeli political parties, the son, Rabbi Yitzhak Basri, told Reuters, a week before a national election.

The bird flu outbreak stemmed from far-left political parties "strengthening and encouraging homosexuality," Rabbi Basri's son quoted him as saying.

Stephen Hawking: "At the end of the conference the participants were granted an audience with the pope. He told us is was all right to study the evolution of the universe after the Big Bang, but we should not inquire into the Big Bang itself because that was the moment of creation and therefore the work of God."

No word from the pope yet on whether or not we should inquire into the bird flu.

No word from Archbishop of Canterbury on whether or not we should step on the cracks in the sidewalk or walk under ladders.

Batzri's in the news a lot just now:

The state prosecution ordered an investigation into prominent kabbalist Rabbi David Batzri and his son, Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri, for suspected incitement to racism.

According to prosecution lawyer Shai Nitzan, the two used unacceptable means in attempt to convince residents of Jerusalem's Pat neighborhood to protest a local bi-lingual school where Arab and Jewish children study together.

...At the conference, the elder Batzri told Pat residents: "The establishment of a school like this one is a despicable and impure act. Stand in the way and prevent this. Darkness and light cannot be mixed. The people of Israel are pure and Arabs are a nation of asses. The question must be asked, why didn't God give them four legs, because they are asses."

The son, Yitzhak Batzri, also made objectionable comments. "The Arabs are beasts and asses," he said. "They are inferior, they want to take our daughters. People say we are racist, but - they are the evil ones, the cruel ones, the scum of snakes. This is war."

As a Jew, that makes me sad and ashamed. Just goes to show that idiocy is not reserved for Christians.
Since that occured in Israel, there is not much we can do about it, but I propose that for all the equivalent idiots in this country (make your own list), every time there is a tragedy involving a bunch of "good" Christians (church bus goes off road, kills 16 who were on their way to...) we should cut out the article and send it to one of them. I know, their response will be "God works in mysterious ways", etc. But maybe, just maybe, after being bombarded every time it happens, some, small, light will go on.

Next, Batzri the Younger will be saying that the Arabs are poisoning the wells.

I read about Basri the Elder's gay/bird flu comment a few days ago. I wonder the extent to which this idiocy might be related to the World Gay Pride festival scheduled for Jerusalem in August.

That's one loving God he believes in. What did the turkeys and chickens ever do to deserve it?
