Chuck Colson Repeats DI Lies

Posted on: February 3, 2007 9:29 AM, by Ed Brayton

Conviced Watergate criminal Charles Colson has picked up on the DI's flagrant lies about Judge Jones allegedly copying his ruling and is putting a megaphone to them. Those lies have been thoroughly debunked, but truth is not the issue here. The DI knows their accusations are crap, but they don't care. The goal is not to tell the truth, it's to convince their followers. Truth is completely irrelevant to them, as it has always been to Colson.

It's sad that Colson's much-publicized prison conversion did not change his approach to advancing causes he believes in, exemplified by his infamous "I'd walk over my own grandmother to re-elect Richard Nixon."

You've really got to love it, tho.

First:

Maybe I am an idealist, but going back to law school, I have always respected judges. I believe they take seriously their oath to uphold the laws and the Constitution and to rule impartially. Sad to say, this judge apparently did not.

then toward the end:

As World magazine noted, none of what Judge Jones did in the Dover decision amounts to a violation of judicial ethics.

So apparently, Judge Jones violated his oath of office, but did nothing improper. Maybe this is an instance of "specified complexity"?

If one were very charitable, one might think it possible that Colson has been hoaxed on this as others were.

But either way, we know what he's saying is hoax, and shouldn't be spread. So let's call for action.

If your newspaper regularly carries Colson's column, call the editor and let her (or him) know that Colson's column falls prey to the hoax. Give the editor a couple of links to track down the information -- give the editor Nick Matzke's phone number at the NCSE. Tell the editor that you're sure the editor doesn't want to be in on spreading already falsified material.

Same thing, if you have a local radio station that carries Colson's commentaries. Call the station, tell them that Colson's been hoaxed, and that they shouldn't broadcast material they know to be false. Of course, you may tell them, they are very careful not to do that since they have a license to worry about (and Colson doesn't). Thank the radio station profusely for stopping the hoax.

Then make a note of the conversation and write a letter to the FCC telling them of your conversation. Copy the station. Tell the FCC to put it in the station's license renewal file. Tell the station the same thing.

It's too bad that Colson doesn't leave a contact on his website so that well-meaning Christians can correct his error and stop the hoax. Certainly he didn't intelligently design his site to prevent such error catching, did he?

How about this pathetic article linked under "further reading" to get your blood pumping:

There goes "charitable".

Sorry to be coming from behind here. Chuck Colson's headquarters is located in my home town, Loudoun County, VA and I'm just beginning to see what we can do to help him complete his "conversion" to productive citizenry. What does DI stand for?

Jonathan, DI is the Discovery Institute.

Do you know where I can get a copy of Judge Jones's ruling AND the ACLU document referred to here? I would like to see this for myself.
Thanks in advance.
