Dispatches from the Creation Wars

Not Exactly Lincoln-Douglass

A reader left a link to this article about a televised debate between Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort and the guys who originated the blasphemy challenge. On either side.I’ll listen to a debate between, say, William Lane Craig and Quentin Smith, or between Alvin Plantinga and Richard Dawkins. But this doesn’t strike me as a clash of the intellectual titans. On either side.

If not a “clash of the intellectual titans”, how about just Clash of the Titans? Cameron & Comfort vs. an armed Harry Hamlin and a mechanical owl.

Probably would be a better movie…

I think the Rational Responders are pretty on the ball. While not on the same level as a Dawkins or Harris (quite), they are going to fight the good fight, and make a good showing of themselves. They are polite, articulate and non-confrontational. I think they will make those two look like chumps. At least I hope.

And frankly, any time a reasonable atheist appears on tv is a cause for joy, as it is one step closer to public acceptance and the end of the negative stereotypes. I probably won’t watch, for the same reason I don’t read Dawkins or Harris. I’m already in the choir, I don’t need the preachin’. The people who should watch, either won’t or will think that a banana IS pretty good “proof” of an anthropomorphic god who gets mad when you touch your naughty parts.

    It’s Lincoln-Douglas.

I am amazed at how many people think that God’s existence is a matter of faith. It’s not, and I will prove it at the debate – once and for all. This is not a joke. I will present undeniable scientific proof that God exists.

Oh man, this is going to be good.

Ouch! I know that you hold the “blasphemy challenge” thing in low regard (it’s not exactly my cup of tea either) but I think saying that the Rational Response Squad guys are on the same intellectual level as Comfort and Cameron is a bit over the top Ed.

Oh, I’d say they’re a lot more intelligent than Comfort and Cameron. Hell, that pretty much goes without saying; you’d be hard pressed to find two mammals any dumber than those two halfwits. But the other side isn’t exactly Robert Ingersoll and Clarence Darrow either.

    They’re very intelligent

And better yet, unlike most atheists, they will go on the attack. You can’t reason with fundies, the only thing you can do is go on the attack, call them on their BS and make them pay for their stupidity

Dawkins is an amazing man, but he’s too calm and collected for American audiences, he simply doesn’t have it in his nature to go after them because the people he deals with are frankly used to real debates based on intellect.

I’m through watching Ellen Johnson and the like whine and wheedle on TV. We need people like the RRS who will go in there and beat the intellectual crap out of them, and do it in a TV friendly manner that will get and keep interest.

How many of us are an Ingersoll or Darrow Ed?
