Mass Resignations From Congress?

A correspondent from CBS News made this rather audacious claim to Chris Matthews:

Gloria Borger: This new ethics legislation that’s been passed by the House, is going to be passed by the Senate. Watch for mass resignations from House members, who are now saying they can’t afford to live here unless they’re bought and paid for by lobbyists. they’re going to leave.

I’d be willing to place a sizable bet with Borger that this is complete and utter nonsense. In fact, if there are even 5 resignations in the House before the next Congressional election, I’ll go to Borger’s house and clean her driveway with a toothbrush.

would that it were true . . . i’d love to see a bunch of those yo-yos move out so people of conscience could move in.

Are you going to qualify this statement to discount House members who resign due to criminal indictments (or upcoming criminal indictments) to “spend more time with their families”?

‘Cause 5 crooks getting caught with their hands in the cookie jar over the next year doesn’t seem like it would be completely out of the realm of possibility, though that doesn’t seem to be what Borger is talking about.

(Or how about House members who “decide not to run” in 2008? That would be how I would expect a House Member to “resign” in the face of ethics rules that make D.C. “unliveable” — serve out his term, make some noise about how he’s done what he came to DC to do, then slink out to a fat deal as a lobbyist.)

She will get some threats and some abusive mail and phone calls, no doubt. But what most Odessa Christians will do, I suspect, is ignore the content of her letter completely, and, instead, get down on their knees and pray that she shall come to Jesus and be saved. And I find that, in a way, even scarier.

Good, let them resign. We need some fresh, young blood in Congress anyway.

Did she explain what the downside of this would be?

How much would it cost in bribes to get five members to resign and who would contribute just to see Ed in action with his toothbrush?

Any congressperson who’d resign just because their lobbying income is about to diminish is a congressperson I’m glad to see gone.
