A Few Choice Falwell Quotes

Category:
Posted on: May 16, 2007 3:29 PM, by Ed Brayton

Timothy Noah has compiled a few choice Falwell quotes at Slate. I especially like this nasty quote about Martin Luther King:

"I must personally say that I do question the sincerity and nonviolent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. James Farmer, and others, who are known to have left-wing associations."

Followed by this blatant lie much later:

"You know, I supported Martin Luther King Jr., who did practice civil disobedience."
This from a guy who used to feature segregationists Lester Maddox and George Wallace on the Old Time Gospel Hour in the 1960s and who once called desegregation a tool of Satan. And people still want to pretend that he was sincere? He was a lying, ignorant bigot and a fraud.

Yes, when I heard that Falwell had died, I was very glad. I don't know why people think we should not be glad that we are not sharing the planet with someone as EVIL as Falwell. He was racist, misogynist, and christianist and used his megaphone to give comfort to other racists, misogynists, and christianists. There is nothing in his life to redeem him.

I wouldn't say I was glad (possibly as he has no impact in the UK), but his presence in the world made it a worse place and it is a slightly better place now that he has left it.

The South gasped and everywhere else heaved a huge sigh of relief.

Well, Ed, thanks for reminding me again exactly how much of a douchebag Falwell was well before his sickening little 9/11 kookfest with Pat Robertson. It's not like I'd wish death on even someone like him, but I'm not going to be a hypocrite and spout about what a great guy he was in life when it's so blatantly obvious that he wasn't.

God called Jerry Falwell home.
And gave him a good spanking.

The grandfatherly figure was a man possessing just a bit too much hate.

The best op ed on Falwell that I've seen so far is from someone he deeply wronged.

Thanks, Pseudonym -- ust another of Falwell's targets acting more Christian than Falwell.

"We love each other very much," he says. "Big hug. But it's not like that. It was a kids show, know what I mean? And we don't even have genitalia, know what I mean?"
