Delusions of Machismo

Category:
Posted on: June 3, 2007 5:55 PM, by Ed Brayton

The Worldnutdaily has a column up with the following headline:

Leave it to the ladies

Exclusive: Pat Boone honors women leaders who've stepped up due to male 'wimpiness'

Pat Boone. Talking about male wimpiness. Pat Frickin Boone, who could only seem macho if he stood next to Andy Williams. Someone really needs to come up with some sort of irony transplant surgery.

Hey, you don't wanna mess with the Boonenator when he's "In a Metal Mood."

And what does someone mean by "male whimpiness?" I suggest that the term isn't meant to apply to when guys get sick and want to be mothered incessantly.

Is "male whimpiness" the desire not to kill furry little animals with a sub-machine gun?

I dunno. What IS "male whimpiness?"

It comes from the idea, popular in fundamentalist circles, that in God's ideal world only men are to be in poistions of leadership. The only excuse for a woman to lead is when the man has wimped out of his responsibility and the woman is forced to reluctantly take over.

The perfect biblical illustration is the story of Deborah and Jael which I posted about a few weeks ago. There's a link to a whacked out fundamentalist website that goes into detail about this very issue.

It seems Pat hopes to resuscitate his image by riding on the reputation of his ancestor Daniel.

Pat Boone is so silly. He mentioned the rise of female statesmen in Isreal, Great Britain and Pakistan and wondered if these women (who the jerk never names) could have risen to power if not for the absence of strong men. I think Margaret and Golda did have male rivals to deal with, being politicians in functional republics and all. I don't know as much about Margaret thatcher as I'd like, but I do know a little about Golda. The thing is, Jewish women are strong, especially grandmothers. You just can't resist a Jewish grandmother. They have willpower. Trying to argue with a Jewish grandmother is like trying to resist the Jedi Mind Trick.

Pat Boone would not seem macho in comparison to Andy Williams. Johnny Mathis, perhaps, but not Andy Williams.

raj,
Chances Are, you are correct.

I at first thought of Andy Dick, and the whole thing made so much more sense ;)

Bingo.

Except that women can sometimes be leaders- of women's church groups, knitting clubs or charity drives.

In which case, they're leading a group of women. How tough can that be? /snark
