Ted Haggard is asking his former victims followers to send money to support him and his wife as they pursuit degrees in counseling and psychology. And it looks like he has his next scam in the works:
The couple and two of their sons planned to move Oct. 1 to the Phoenix Dream Center, a faith-based halfway house in Phoenix, where Haggard and his wife would provide counseling, the e-mail said."It looks as though it will take two years for us to have adequate earning power again, so we are looking for people who will help us monthly for two years," the e-mail said. "During that time we will continue as full-time students, and then, when I graduate, we won't need outside support any longer."
Well sure. The first person you'd go to if you needed counseling is a disgraced former minister who was caught snorting meth off the buttocks of a gay prostitute while preaching family values, only to be "cured" of his "sin" after only three weeks. Colorado Confidential has the full text of the letter. Here's how he says you can help:
If people want to support us directly, they can mail checks to Ted and Gayle Haggard, 9699 N. Hayden, Suite 108, PMB 180, Scottsdale, AZ 95259. This is a private mail box address that we have been using since we moved to the Phoenix area. If any supporters need a tax deduction for their gift, they can mail it to Families With a Mission at P.O. Box 63125, Colorado Springs, CO 80962. The supporters would need to write their check to "Families With A Mission" and put a separate note on it that it is for the Haggard family, then Families With a Mission will mail us 90% of the funds for support and use 10% for administrative costs.
But it turns out that Family With a Mission no longer exists; it was voluntarily dissolved early this year. But it gets weirder: the guy behind this group, it appears, is a convicted sex offender:
There's only one name on file with the Colorado Secretary of State in connection with Families With a Mission: Paul Huberty.Huberty is the "registered agent" of Families With a Mission and the registered agent's mailing address--POB 63125, Colorado Springs, CO 80962-3125--is the same address Haggard included in his letter to his supporters. Another address on file with the Colorado Secretary of State for Families With a Mission is 855 Pebble Creek Ct., Monument, CO 80132. That's the charity's "principal office mailing address." According to the Assessor's office in El Paso County, Colorado, 855 Pebble Creek Ct. is a private residence owned by Paul Huberty. (The only other address listed for Families With a Mission is a home that Huberty used to own.)
And here's what Coffman learned when he started searching through public records: A man named Paul G. Huberty was convicted of having sex with his 17 year-old ward while he was in the military and stationed in Germany. Paul G. Huberty eventually moved to Hawaii, where he was on that state's sex offender registry--you can download a PDF here. Hawaii's sex offender registry mentions a conviction for a sex offense in 2004. Court records in Hawaii show that Paul G. Huberty was found guilty of attempted sexual assault in January of 2004 (download 'em here, here, and here), and sentenced a year in jail with all but six months suspended. Huberty was also put on probation for five years, ordered to take polygraphs, not allowed to possess pornography, "not allowed on the property of Kona Christian Academy" and other schools, not allowed to posses firearms, forbidden from foster parenting or being the guardian of a minor, and ordered to pay restitution to a crime victims fund.
When Paul G. Huberty's moved out of the state of Hawaii he was required to register his new address, which he did: 855 Pebble Creek Ct., Monument, CO 80132, the "principal mailing address" for the charity Families With a Mission, which also happens to be a home owned by Paul Huberty, the registered charity's agent.
So the man who heads up the defunct charity Families With a Mission--the charity that's going to take a 10% cut from all "tax deductible" donations to the Haggard family--would appear to be a registered sex offender. Well, in Hawaii at any rate. Paul Huberty has not, according to publicly available records, registered as a sex offender in Colorado, something he is required to do by state law. Coffman put in a call to officials in Colorado to see if Huberty has registered too recently to appear on the sex offenders website, and he's waiting to hear back.
Makes you wonder what exactly the mission of Families with a Mission really is.

For the record, IRS regulations specifically list as nondeductible any charitable contribution directed toward the benefit of an individual. So this whole thing is a scam.

Actually 501(c)3 had a slightly different meaning, that's probably how they've set it up. Granted, you can't profit but donations can be used to pay for training, etc.

Haggard is an able-bodied man, isn't he? Why shouldn't he just take out student loans & work part-time like the rest of us? Ugh.

Anyone gullible enough to actually send money to any of these people should have his or her high school diploma revoked.

I: Haggard needs women.
II: Mars needs women.
Illogical conclusion: Mars needs Haggard! God speed, Major Ted!
We'll send him cheesy movies...the worst we can find... la, la, la! ... ;-)

Amen, Adrienne. I went to law school in the evening while working full time. I didn't have any children, but about half of my fellow evening students and a decent minority of the day students did. Of course, we all had skills that employers actually wanted.

Perhaps-- we could think of this as just a slightly different form of charity-- someone in the Phoenix area could just offer Mr. Haggard a job? Lots of "students" have them even despite the high demands of higher education; being a student's husband is surely not much harder, and Phoenix has far better job opportunities than most "college towns" would.
Just saying.

That Fox News article to which Ed linked provides the reason why Ted isn't looking for a job:
If he's really desperate for cash, he could drop his asking price to half a mil - I suspect I'd have no problem leasing a nice apartment, paying for books and tuition, and supporting my family of four for two years on $500,000.It is unlikely that Ted is going to be able to find a part-time job that will support him in the style to which he has become accustomed - apparently, the $300,000 he took in back in 2006 is already gone. That being the case, he has turned to that ever-reliable fountain of cash - gullible people.

Damn!
I need to have my morals surgically extracted so I can become some kind of fundy minister or politician. These guys & gals just have the 'nads to really clean up sometimes.
Too bad I don't have a soul to sell (maybe because my folks already sold it, like on that new CW program "Reaper").

While real estate here in COS hasn't been as hard hit as elsewhere, it is perfectly possible that Haggard's house might be underwater if he sold it at current market prices. He might be best off making a short sale - if he can get whoever holds the mortgage to agree. (And these days, it might be hard to even figure out who does own the mortgage - could be split up into several tranches in those CDO's we've been hearing about.)
Guys like Haggard, they tend to think the good times will just keep on rolling. If he was just a tiny bit overcommited in his finances, it is easy to believe he might be a bit financially strapped right now. Especially with a family. (insert sound of world's smallest violin)
I'm not the one who's going to bail him out of the hole he made for himself. But it could be true that he's pissed away all his money.

"Anyone gullible enough to actually send money to any of these people should have his or her high school diploma revoked." Big assumption there, Julie... :)
Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of revoking their right to breed, starting with Ted, of course.

Actually, hmd, there's a more likely reason that Haggard might find himself currently overcommitted on his mortgage. Pastors don't pay taxes on the money they spend on their housing. For you and me, a $1000 housing payment probably requires us to earn about $1400 in wages (30% for income taxes and withholding). Haggard only had to earn $1000 to make that payment. The smarteset think a pastor can do is to spend as much as possible on his mortgage payment - there's no downside.
