With all the talk of Gordon Klingenschmitt and religion in the military, this is a perfect time for this article to appear. It's a law review article by William Dobosh, a military lawyer with JAG, arguing that chaplain-led prayers at mandatory military events (as opposed to religious events where attendance is voluntary) are unconstitutional. He examines the issue under all three potential standards - the Lemon test, the endorsement test and the coercion test - and concludes that such prayers are unconstitutional under any of them. I agree with him entirely.

Wow.
I had no idea that this was a problem. It certainly wasn't during the time I spent enlisted in the USAF (1979 - 1987.) We never prayed except in chapel during a service.
