Yet another example of why we need to keep religious righters off school boards. A board member in Bakersfield, CA, has been pushing for posters that say “In God We Trust” (posters created by the American Family Association) to be placed in every classroom. His rationale is that it’s our national motto. When it seemed like that wouldn’t work, he expanded his proposal to require not only such posters but also the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. It doesn’t look like the rest of the board is going for it.
Personally, I think the whole concept of having a national motto is absurd. We might as well call it the national cliche or the national catchphrase. That’s all it is. And it means as much as “Just Do It” or “Home of the Whopper.”
