Scalzi on the Creation Museum

Posted on: November 18, 2007 9:02 AM, by Ed Brayton

John Scalzi has a very amusing essay about his trip to Ken Ham's creationist museum. Horseshit, indeed.

Frightenly enough, David Barton was on Janet Folger's show talking about creating a companion museum devoted to his version of Americon History. Not just horseshit, but horseshit squared.

Actually, that's American, not "Americon" History. Then again, given who is pushing it, perhaps Americon is more appropriate.

And it's "frighteningly", not "frightenly". Not enough chai in my system this morning.

Re "Americon" I liked the pun. With your permission, I will use it elsewhere.

That was the best five minutes of my day. i wonder how loud one can laugh in this "museum" before being escorted out.

Oh, btw, this piece by Scalzi was one of the funniest things I've read in years.

One of my favorite parts of the AIG's creationism museum (when I visited in June) was the part about how there were no weeds in the Garden of Eden. (Which Scalzi mentioned.) A scientist friend of mine once remarked that he doesn't think creationists spend much time outdoors, otherwise they'd see evolution at work. I don't think they spend much time gardening either. Otherwise they'd grasp the obvious: A weed is just a plant that's not where you want it. Do these folks pay attention to anything?

Be my guest, though the pun was initially a product of numb hands rather than an intentional snark.

Yikes! Don't think for one momenht that all Christians feel the same way. Some of us actually do use reason and logic.

I went to the Walking With Dinosaurs show on Saturday. The show itself was very well done, but what pleased me even more was that the science was dead on. They covered a lot, and I learned things that had changed since I was last familiar with dinosaurs in the halcyon days of my youth. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone with an interest in dinosaurs.

Now compare that to the travesty that is the Creation Museum. One of the "stars" of Walking With Dinosaurs is the Utahraptor. Walking puts them in the early Cretaceous, about 130 million years ago. The "different starting point" of the Craptastic Museum puts them at 4,300 years ago. So apparently, I was either born in 1976 or 129999683. It just depends on your starting point.

Another good option is here if you're looking for the "Jackass meets gonzo journalism" take on it.
