Hinn Resigns from ORU Board

Posted on: January 13, 2008 9:16 AM, by Ed Brayton

Benny Hinn has resigned from the Oral Roberts University board of regents in the wake of the Richard Roberts scandal. I can't get over the fact that a university actually had Benny Hinn on the board of regents. And people wonder why I think ORU is a colossal joke. This man was on their board of regents:

The bigger joke is that a con man like Hinn would actually resign in presumed outrage over scandalous dishonesty. That's like Larry Flynt refusing advertising from a strip club on the grounds that it objectifies women.

Well said, Martin.

Were he born 100 years ago, Benny Hinn would have roamed America's countryside in a little wagon selling "miracle" hair tonics.

I've always been struck by how overly theatrical Hinn's "healings" are. That in itself should be a tip-off. An omnipotent God would be able to heal without smacking people in the head, but charlatans nearly always try to make a dramatic show. Get people reacting emotionally, and they'll stop thinking logically.

I'd like to get Sean Hannity's take on this. These are folks that live in a country that celebrates religion!

Great use of one of my favorite songs! That was a great way to start out Monday morning. I'm awake now. Can it be any more obvious that he's just shoving people around? And all that twitching afterwards! I was wondering if they were hurt. Any other context this would be assault and battery. Put me in mind of Jim Bloom/Joe Bob Brigg's "Godstuff" which has a segment on Benny Hinn where you will find yourself wincing for the poor dude he's supposedly healing (in this case over said dude's objection).

It doesn't matter how phony he is, there are obviously enough gullible people in the world to finance him and others like him. Criticizing them only plays into the persecution role theists love to call up whenever they are subjected to it.

Wow! That's gotta be one of the funniest videos I've ever seen! Someone call Bob Saget, we have a $100k winner here.

It's kind of depressing to realize that when it comes to religion all those folks in the audience are more mainstream than I am.

I realized another way this could be done. Do it on a Star Trek theme, and use phaser effects and add little light rays so it looks like he's zapping them with a phaser. Especially the ones that add the nice little theatrical death twitch when they hit the floor. I've seen a clip from Star Trek Voyager that was a guy being hit by a phaser before they added the effects, and it looked just like this.
