Danish Police Prevent Cartoonist's Murder

Posted on: February 15, 2008 9:02 AM, by Ed Brayton

The Danish police appear to have foiled a murder plot against one of the cartoonists involved in the famous Danish Muhammed caricatures. Several people have been arrested before they could carry out their plan. My only advice to the cartoonist: don't get complacent and think you're safe. Remember Theo Van Gogh.

So a cartoonist says you're violent? Can't let them get away with that. Better kill him.

If I wasn't personally acquainted with a number of Moslems who are peaceful, gentle people, I could easily fall into the "Everybody in a turban is a terrorist" mentality the press seems to want to promote.

"Appear" being the operative word. The police haven't shown much in the way of evidence - consequently, one of the suspects has been released (though he's still charged), while the other two, who aren't Danish citizens, stand to be deported without trial (which is possible due to a relatively recent change in the relevant legislation).

It would look good on you if you got your news about this matter from somewhere other than one of the involved parties.

BaldApe - I know what you are getting at, but I probably should point out anyways that most people in turbans aren't even muslims (in the west), they are Sikhs.

From the article:

What the cartoonist wanted to say with his cartoon was that many people exploit the prophet to legitimize terror. However, the cartoon was widely seen as a depiction of the prophet as a terrorist.

I can see why moderate muslims would find that offensive, but why should the terrosists care? Wouldn't they prefer it if Muhammed was considered to be more like them? I'm confused...

True enough, Hardeep, but tell that to the Fox News fans out there. My wife's best friend was on a cruise a while back, and her parents were genuinely fearful over a young woman who kept her hair covered.

OK, now that was condescending.

Seriously, though, I agree with you on this one.
