One of the best things about my work with the Michigan Messenger has been meeting and becoming friends with Todd Heywood, one of my colleagues there. He is a man of enormous passion and commitment to his ideals and I have come to admire him a great deal. And though he’s long been out of the closet as a gay man, today he steps out of another closet and discloses what his friends have known for a few months now: he’s HIV-positive.
Today is the Day of Silence, a day on which students in schools stand up for equality for gays and lesbians. But it is appropriate that Todd chose today to break the silence about AIDS and to turn a critical eye not only on society, but on himself and on the gay community (yes, I hate that phrase but have nothing to replace it with) as well.
