Former Pro Wrestler Objects to Day of Silence

Posted on: April 12, 2008 9:16 AM, by Ed Brayton

Yet another clueless local politician throws a hissy fit over the notion of high school kids standing up against anti-gay harassment, and this time it's former WWE wrestler Brain Blair, one half of the Killer Bees tag team (wow, that's really flashing back to my youth).

"Can you imagine asking for a 'Day of Cheer for Heterosexuality?' If no action is taken to change this policy, then perhaps it is time for another surgical strike from the majority; 'A Day of Abstention' from school participation might be considered."

No, you dolt, this has nothing to do with asking the government for anything. The Day of Silence is undertaken by students, not by the government. And if you think students should be excused from school because other students are advocating an idea they don't like, you're a moron. But if you're gonna have a day of cheer for heterosexuality, you won't be starting with this picture.

Ed Brayton: "former WWE wrestler Brain Blair"

Judging from what I Googled, that's a typo, and judging from what you said about him, it's really a typo. :-)

Well hell, maybe we should stop looking to professional wrestlers for insightful moral guidance.

Posted by: Alexandra | April 12, 2008 2:32 PM

Uh huh yeah we're supposed to take something like that seriously coming from a guy who makes a living from putting on a fake show for his gullible crowd. (That, and he used to be a professional wrestler too if I'm not mistaken.)

Ed , can you get me the information about the national day of silence , i need it for my son , i have asked if he would participate as a Birthday present for me ..
i am often shocked when wrestlers come out and claim to be against homosexuality , especially those famous in the 80`s when many of the top characters were clearly gay themed , for Example it is storied that Vince McMahon was involved in many diffrent sexual activities and Brutus Beefcake a clearly gay character .
I think it is impossible for religion to claim any moral position when religion it self is against Freedom, tolerance and rationality . postions needed for morality ...

You guys apparently missed Pam's update where she linked to an even better picture. This one looks like he was younger and his body was less roided up, more natural.

Why would anyone go to a professional wrestler for moral guidance? Everyone knows our go-to guy for moral guidance and day-to-day living is Kirk Cameron.

uhm , well since i know many pro wrestlers and spent many years as one ..my guess is because, it is actually a rib (Joke). cause i would never consider myself a moral person . but i sure love to pull pranks and making people believe i was a moral Guide would be a great one

I loved to watch pro-wresting, it's the theatre of the absurd of the modern age. Wonderfully silly (and entertaining) stuff, just as long as you don't take it too seriously. - DJ

I've often commented to my fiancée that the only places you ever see men dressed like that are in professional wrestling and Gay Pride parades.

'Day of Cheer for Heterosexuality'? Go right ahead. Get everyone you know to wear a T-shirt saying "I love my wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend". I know you won't, because the entire point is to be threatening towards homosexuals, not supportive of heterosexuals.

Then again, I doubt his 'Us-vs-Them' mentality allows for that distinction to be drawn.

Vic Vanity,

Ed , can you get me the information about the national day of silence , i need it for my son , i have asked if he would participate as a Birthday present for me ..

I think the Day of Silence is meant to be a very personal statement, based on a very personal decision. It really isn't the sort of thing one person asks another to do as a favor or as a birthday present. Making a public statement like this needs to be a step that's completely integrated with a person's own inner feelings and thinking, not something done in response to pressure from another, no matter how lovingly or with what good intentions that pressure is applied.

I hope you'll reconsider asking your son to do this as an expression of your wishes, rather than strictly as an expression of his own, and ask for something else for your birthday or leave the choice of gifts to him. And then, who knows, he may indeed make his own decision to join in on the Day of Silence. If he does, it will mean a thousand times more to him, and to you, too.

Blair should consider focusing his message in order to truly identify the downtrodden segment of society that continually feels the effects of stigmatism and prejudice. He should call it the Day of Cheer for Affluent Healthy White Anglo-Saxon Christian Heterosexuals. And if his idea takes off, he should leverage his WWE fame to create a national support group. Those unfortunate people can never catch a break.

Dingo jack ; the only pictures i have left as a couple of pics of me hanging out with other wrestlers after shows ,
I was lucky enough to get the chance to hang out with some of the people i idolized as a kid .. i can say i knew a couple of the WWE divas (one before the boob job i think she was prettier then).

JuliaL ; what i did was present my son with the information .. had him read the site and then left him with the choice to register or not i left the room . so i cant say if he did or not and it was entirly his choice ..

Why do I get the feeling that XYZ is Larry Fafarman? Hmmm, maybe it's the fact that he's posted under "XYZ" before. And maybe it's also the ridiculous logical leap from "allowing a Day of Silence" to "putting people on the spot."

Vic Vanity,

Good for you! I always found it easy to provide information for my children, really hard to let them learn by making their own choices. That's still true, and both are over 35!
