Shaun Mullen has this excellent retrospective and tribute to the late Col. David Hackworth. Hackworth is the most decorated soldier in the history of the American military, but he was also a maverick who dared to tell the truth when the Pentagon preferred lies. We could use a lot more like him.

I'd have laid it all out for him anytime. What a valiant and true patriot, to speak for the men who cannot. Just as with Molly Ivins...where are we gonna find another Hack?

With all due respect to COL Hackworth's truly amazing accomplishments and incredible list of earned medals - you cannot be the Army's most highly decorated soldier without earning the nation's highest award, the Congressional Medal of Honor. Anyone who ever studied for an Army promotion board knows that the most highly decorated soldier was Audie Murphy.

Well, Ed said he is the "most decorated", not the "most highly decorated" soldier.

Hackworth was an effective and brave soldier and served his country well while in uniform, but he was a self-serving, self-righteous, sanctimonious bag of wind in his "career" as a journalist. His hypocritical, petty attack on Mike Boorda was just the most notorious of his witch hunts and is a notorious example of a man who failed to change the system going after a man who most assuredly had. And Chesty Puller remains the most decorated soldier in American history.

Gen. Puller was the most highly decorated Marine in American history.
