Continuing its longstanding pattern of misinformation, twice in recent days Fox News anchors and contributors have flat out lied about an article in the Jerusalem Post that badly paraphrased something Obama’s brother said. Last week it was Brit Hume:
“But Obama’s half brother is not so sure. Malik Obama tells The Jerusalem Post that ‘if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background.'”
Then Monica Crowley did the same thing two days ago, for which Keith Olbermann awarded her a much-deserved Worst Person in the World medal. But all of this is nonsense, Malik Obama didn’t say anything like that. Here’s the line in the Jerusalem Post article:
Barack Obama’s half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background.
In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya.
Notice that there are no quotes in that statement, it was a paraphrase from the newspaper. But Jake Tapper of ABC News has posted the audio of that radio interview and it doesn’t have anything even remotely like a statement about Obama having a “Muslim background.” Media Matters has a transcript of that audio; there’s nothing even faintly resembling that statement.
Gonna hold your breath for a retraction? Me neither.
