I'm in Kalamazoo for the weekend. I'm going to visit my best friend and his family, torment his adorable kids for a while, watch some fireworks with them, spend some time with my parents and, hopefully, play a little poker as well. There's plenty of bloggy goodness on the way for those with nothing better to do this weekend than read my ramblings.
Happy 4th of July, everyone. It's a perfect day to read the Declaration of Independence, admire the principles announced in it (however incompletely put into practice both then and now) and resolve never to support political leaders who are not committed to those principles.

"Bloggy goodness"?
*squints*
Ed, is that really you?
Oh, wait... "... there's plenty of bloggy goodness on the way for those with nothing better to do this weekend than read my ramblings"
Ah, there it is. That characteristic elitism we've all come to know and love ;)
I was worried you'd become a Buffy fan for a moment.

The Declaration of Independence was in the Oregonian today, and instead of setting it aside to read "later" (i.e., probably never), I actually read all the way through. That was probably the first time since jr high -- if I actually read the whole document then.
As I read, I could imagine someone living in Iraq right now expressing many of those ideas. Basically, "End the occupation. We want to govern ourselves." Granted, there are a lot of differences between our war of independence and what is going on in Iraq, but I really hate it that we are regarded by many as the ones in the red uniforms this time.

I think a good tradition for Independence Day is to pick up and begin reading a banned book. There are hundreds of them.
