Carol Kreck, the former librarian and Denver Post reporter who was arrested for carrying a sign that said "McCain = Bush" outside a John McCain appearance at a public venue, has pled not guilty to trespassing charges. I'm surprised it's gone this far. I would have thought the prosecutor would quietly decline to press charges and it would go away. Why on earth would they want to continue to draw attention to their unconstitutional policies?

Looks like a certain prosecutor is hoping to curry favor with a prospective McCain administration.

Looks to me like a certain cretin prosecutor is going to be SOL come Jan 22.
Posted by: J-Dog | August 7, 2008 9:23 AM
Maybe its the other way. Maybe the prosecuter wants to take it to trial and lose and hopefully highlight to everyone that this kind of behavior is amazingly anti-american.
Ok, probably not.

Later, a spokeswoman for the complex said that the security guard was mistaken, that the Secret Service had nothing to do with it, and that McCain's campaign staff had asked that people holding signs be removed from the galleria.
McCain's campaign spokesman, Tom Kise, has said that is not true, that the Senator has a track record of allowing opposing views at his public events, and that the campaign only asked people inside the town-hall meeting not to hold signs of any kind.
Right -- "the Senator has a track record of allowing opposing views at his public events," as long as they don't do anything disruptive, like, you know, EXPRESS their views. What a fucking joke. This issue alone can drive a whole season of attack ads -- if only Obama's people would get on the ball about it.
Given the sheer cowardice shown by ALL parties in this little affair, I'm surprised anyone was stupid enough to let it get this far. I guess they just thought the little old lady would obediently roll over, pay the fine and die.

For my part, I hope this 'little old lady' stands by her principles, and fights this case as far as possible. If I were a lawyer, I'd offer to take her case pro bono.
Nothing like shining light on shady practices.
If there's a fund for this lady's legal expenses, Ed, would you post a link to it, so we can contribute?

Denver and Boulder are pretty progressive cities. However, if you want a real future in state politics you have to be a Republican. It's much like in Missouri, where you have two liberal cities that provide the economic engine for the state but their political wishes are superceded in favor of the much more conservative views of the rest of the state.

If I remember correctly, when a private property owner swears out a "legitimate" tresspass complaint, the police/DA are more or less required to prosecute. Note I put "legitimate" in quotes, because the case doesn't sound very legit to me either. But the DA may have decided it's better to let a judge make that call, rather than be accused of dimissing the case for political reasons.
What I find entertaining is the way everyone is scrambling to deny they were the ones who asked the lady be ejected. Can't wait for the trial, personally. I just hope they don't stall it until after the election.

Blaidd Drwg, you can contribute to Carol Kreck's defense fund atProgressNow Action. If you'd like something material in return, they're also selling "McCain = Bush" T-shirts to raise money for her defense.
Blaidd Drwg... that's Welsh for Bad Wolf, isn't it? Strange, everywhere I go those words seem to follow me.

Doctor Who rocks!
Blink was, IMHO, worthy of a Hugo Award nomination, even though it was a "Doctor-lite" episode. Seriously creepy....

I find it funny that a comparison of McCain to a Republican president (or 2) of the United States is considered an unbearable insult by a Republican.
