Greenwald Defends ACORN

Posted on: October 23, 2008 9:23 AM, by Ed Brayton

Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films have put out a new Youtube video defending ACORN. The full video is below the fold. Particularly telling is the footage a speech by Paul Weyrich, probably the most powerful conservative leader you've never heard of (he was a co-founder of both the Moral Majority and the Heritage Foundation, as well as the Council on National Policy, the Free Congress Foundation and numerous other organizations).

While I agree with the overall premise and trust the veracity of ACORN's argument within the margin of error for the electoral process given current state-by-state polling numbers; I don't think they present their case strongly enough in two areas:

1) Greenwald fails to address the incidents where a handful of ACORN employees have purposefully perpetrated registration fraud. He should have and then had ACORN illuminate the fact that such incidents rarely translate to voter fraud and that such fraud falls safely inside the margin of error for the electoral process used in an election.

2) They don't provide the worst case results of their process, and then address that failure to put it in its proper context when it comes to actual voter fraud. Instead Greenwald offers ancedotal evidence using North Carolina as an example.

If someone knows of a good story that considers the two issues I raise and provides an accurate response to their affects, I would be most appreciative and I assume other readers would be as well. Ed's article in the Michigan Messenger about this was excellent, I am not sure though that it's still timely given the news coming out since he published that article.

One other minor quibble - they should have expounded more on the fact that ACORN is the primary catcher of such voter registration fraud/errors and are not allowed to squelch these applications themselves but instead still forward to the appropriate governmental authority, which I agree is the best approach. They mentioned it in a manner that was so brief I doubt most people digested it since it's so counter-intuitive to normal business processes, e.g., GM doesn't ship known defective cars to its dealers.

"John McCain paid $175,000 of campaign money to a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states, it has emerged.

As the McCain camp attempts to tie Barack Obama to claims of registration irregularities by the activist group ACORN, campaign finance records detailing the payment to the firm of Nathan Sproul, investigated several times for fraud, threatens to derail that argument."

Talk about a kick in his red shorts! After decades of voter apathy, Mickey Mouse finally decides to register, and now ACORN is dismissing his franchise.
