Think the Presidential Campaign is Nasty?

Posted on: October 12, 2008 9:09 AM, by Ed Brayton

Wait till you hear about the commissioner in Cobb County, Georgia who hired a voodoo priestess to give her opponent cancer. Best of all, she wrote her bad checks to do it:

Cobb County Commissioner Annette Kesting today repeatedly denied accusations from a South Carolina "voodoo priestess" that Kesting wrote $3,000 in bad checks for the woman's services.

George Ann Mills said Kesting approached her at home in Blythewood, S.C., in late August seeking otherworldly help against Democrat Woody Thompson, who beat Kesting in the primary runoff vote for the District 4 seat representing southwest Cobb.

The priestess turned it down, but offered a little help:

Mills said when Kesting visited her, she held up a photo of a man she said was Thompson.

"She said, 'Do you see cancer in him? I said he looks like a very healthy man'," Mills said. "She said, 'Is there anything you can do about this ... give him cancer, or make him have an accident or something?' "

Mills said she refused, saying she didn't want Thompson's blood on her hands. She offered to "make trouble for him, to make people see who he really is."

The commissioner denies it, but has a tough time explaining the money she sent to the voodoo woman:

Mills said Kesting wrote two checks totaling $3,000, which were returned for insufficient funds. Kesting then sent two $1,000 money orders in payment. Mills produced a copy of a MoneyGram receipt, dated Aug. 28. The receipt, which she faxed to the AJC, listed Kesting's husband, Christian, as the sender.

"I kept a paper trail of everything," Mills said. "I don't think this would have ever come out if I had been paid."

Maybe they could contact Palin's pal Muthee. I hear he's good at chasing out witches.

WTF? Does this GOP candidate not read Mr. Rove's memos? Witch doctors are out, WAY OUT, this election cycle. How bad do you think it will look when the ImPalinator's witchorcist, Reverend Muthee, shows up and whacks Ms. Kesting for doin' what she does? And then those bad checks which she probably photocopied and has up over her altar to warn off other folks from doing such things will be discovered by the CSI and well, shit, it's over then.

If Kesting honestly believed that Mills has the power to induce cancer remotely, shouldn't she have been a bit more careful closing the transaction?

Hey, at least this one you can't blame on Christians.

democommie,
Unfortunately, Kesting is a Democrat. The opponent she wanted cursed was a former Republican.

To democommie: Kesting is a Democrat, not a Republican. Stupidity and superstition is nonpartisan, unfortunately.

Insanity is bipartisan. As a bleeding-heart lib, I'm glad this was found out; Better now than if she was in office, doing who knows what in attempts to alter reality.

karl:

Thanks for the correction. I am chastened, I will never again mock Sarah Palin's public sanctimony and nutbag religiosity--sorry, I will too, I can't help it.

If you believe in curses why would you pay the person handing them out with bad checks? Good thing they don't work or this lady would be in for a lot of trouble.

Good to know that voodoo priestesses (or at least this one) have a sense of ethics greater than this politician.

Hey, at least this one you can't blame on Christians.

Actually, in the US many Voodoo practitioners consider themselves Christian. A friend of mine, a Voodoo Priestess, even claims it is a branch of the Catholic Church, albeit one unrecognized by the Vatican. Be that as it may, US Voodoo tends to include praying to the saints and worship of the Virgin Mary. It's become a rather distinct and separate entity from the Haitian version so often maligned by Hollywood. So if you really want to blame Christians, you still can. ;-)

During college, I worked summers at a law firm. One day security came around and had the secretaries go into the offices and had everyone lock the doors on our floor.

The person suing our client had not had a lawyer. She wasn't filing things properly, filled out forms in CRAYON, but the judge kept cutting her breaks. Finally she showed up for a deposition with another woman. Everyone was happy thinking the woman was a lawyer.

The other woman was wearing colorful full skirt and blouse with a wrap. Partway through the deposition she pulled out a doll from the skirt pocket - reached over and pulled a hair from our lead attorny, wrapped it in the doll. Then she started chanting and sticking needles in the doll.

Everyone on our side got up left, went to another office and locked the door. This is when security quietly put the rest of us into lock down, until the women could be escorted (Screaming curses) out of the building. (They were worried she might have a knife or would stab someone with these very long pins - not about the curse)

This was on video - so the judge found in our client's favor.

If she turned it down: a) why did Kesting send her checks at all and b) why did she try to cash them? The story's suspect to say the least. Are the bad checks in evidence? A money order receipt could be put in any one's name. I smell scam.
