Inhofe and the Global Warming Deniers

Posted on: December 17, 2008 9:02 AM, by Ed Brayton

Tim Lambert has an amusing post about former Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, one of the most ridiculous men ever to serve in Congress (and imagine the competition he had to beat out to make that list) and his list of global warming deniers. Turns out that Inhofe's list is even more dishonest than the DI's list of evolution deniers.

Second, how do you get on the list? Well, you have to sign up to get on the Discovery Institute's list, but Inhofe will add you to his list if he thinks you're disputing the global warming consensus and he won't take you off, even if you tell him to do so. Yes, there is someone less honest than the Discovery Institute.

Lambert has some delightfully idiotic quotes from some of the folks who are on both lists, like Edward Blick, Professor Emeritus of the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, University of Oklahoma, who said this:

The predecessors of today's unbelievers replaced the Holy Bible's book of Genesis with Darwin's Origin of the Species. Now with the help of Al Gore and the United Nations they are trying to replace the Holy Bible's book of Revelation with the U.N.'s report Anthropogenic Global Warming. They tell us that man's use of fossil fuels results in too much atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) which causes excessive warming and melting of polar ice caps. They say if we don't take drastic steps (trillions of dollars of taxes, year after year, after year), we will either roast to death, or drown in the rising seas. The plan is for the U.N. to take control of the world's economy and dictate what we can use for transportation (bikes?), what we can eat, where we can live, and what industries we must shut down. This whole scheme is a "Trojan Horse" for global socialism! ...

For thousands of years our earth has undergone cooling and warming under the control of God. Man cannot control the weather, but he can kill millions of people in his vain attempt to control it, by limiting or eliminating the fuel that we use. How does God control our warming and cooling? Scientists have discovered it is the Sun! Amazing, even grade school children know this. The Sun's warming or cooling the earth varies with sunspot and Solar flairs.

This man is a professor at a major public university, for crying out loud. So is David Deming, an Associate Professor of Geosciences also at the University of Oklahoma. Deming recently gave this little gem:

Obama is a vapid demagogue, a hollow man that despises American culture. He is ill-suited to be president of the United States. As the weeks pass, more Americans will come to this realization and elect McCain/Palin in a landslide.

But this quote from Blick is a textbook example of creationist nonsense:

In an absolutely beautiful description, [Isiah] declares that these obedient ones "shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint" (Isa. 40:28-31).

In addition to the obvious spiritual truth conveyed in this context, science has determined that this passage was rather ahead of its time in terms of aerodynamic information.

Dr. Edward F. Blick, who served as a professor in the School of Aerospace at the University of Oklahoma, did extensive wind-tunnel studies at the university with eagles. In doing research in 1971, Dr. Blick and his colleagues discovered that the eagle's six-slotted feathers (at the end of each wing) curve upward in gliding flight. Wind tunnel measurements demonstrated that this design reduced the size of the vortex (whirling current) that emanates from each wing tip. This, in turn, reduces drag on the wings and allows the eagle to soar great distances on the air currents--without even having to beat its wings.

Professor Blick, impressed with the accuracy of the Bible in this regard, stated: "Thus 2,700 years after the scripture in Isaiah was written, science has stumbled onto the same truth."

How do you even begin to parody such stupidity?

The Sun's warming or cooling the earth varies with sunspot and Solar flairs.

Exactly the problem! The sun only has the minimum 14 pieces of flair. It's content with just doing the least it has to. If it were an achiever, it would go look for even more flair, and the Earth would stop warming. Or cooling. Or something.

...

Oh sweet frothy Jesus, I just went to check whether that error was in the original, and (well yes, it is, but...) the original goes on for 9 pages like that! My brain, she's-a stopp-a to work.

Johnny Vector: I suspect that most people who say "you made me spew milk through my nose" or the like are simply exercising their hyperbole muscles. In this case, you really did come within *inches* of making me spew Diet Dr. Pepper all over my keyboard.

You are hereby excused from wearing any flair at all for the remainder of the week. Feel free to express yourself by whatever means you wish, including digitally.

So, the sun is a slacker... The minimum number of pieces of flair at Chotchkies is fifteen. Maybe it just has "the Mondays"...

but he can kill millions of people in his vain attempt to control it, by limiting or eliminating the fuel that we use

It's already limited, and will eventually be eliminated, no matter what any government does. It's a non-renewable resource. The only question is "when are we going to face up to that fact?"

Wait, what?

Isiah says that eagles fly.

Yes, amazing.

Only God himself could have provided such divine knowledge to mankind, surely.

I wish stupidity was painful.

It's annoying reading the Drudge Report daily to observe how Drudge takes anecdotal weather events and turns them into shrill headlines in order to influence his conservative readers regarding global warming. The National Enquirer or Weekly World News has little on Matt Drudge.

What really irks me is that for the second year in the row Inhofe's office is calling this a "U.S. Senate Minority Report." It's not. It's not a minority report - it's something his office put out. He's using the prestige of the Senate to promote his personal anti-science beliefs. I don't know if that's a technical violation of any Senate rules, but it's a sleezy thing to do.

Reading this post and thread has been a roller coaster of emotion. First I was relieved to read that Inhofe is a 'former Senator.' Next I was stunned by the stupidity exhibited in the quotes Ed posted. Then I was greatly amused by Johnny Vector's entire comment. Then I was thoroughly depressed by carlsonjok's correction that Inhofe is still in the Senate. Then I was shocked to learn that Michael Heath manages to read the Drudge Report daily without his head exploding. I'm going back to bed.

Michael Heath manages to read the Drudge Report daily without his head exploding.

LOL. Just doin' G2 (intelligence gathering on the enemy). I do the same with The O'Reilly Factor, though only in very small doses. I live outside AM radio range so no Rush Limbaugh and the gang for me, however I'm always looking him and the rest of the bunch up when I'm within range on trip - small doses only. My observation is that Rush and the rest are becoming more shrill, more strident, and more stupid, with their audience following like the dumb sheep they are. Glen Beck's popularity being Exhibit A to my observation.

@Michael Heath,

Well, I'm glad you, Ed and others have the constitution to do the recon. I've tried and I end up a sputtering mess. I can do very small doses, but I don't think I could handle getting all the way through Drudge everyday.

I don't even follow the logic (if there is any, which I doubt). I have not read the entire quote but I am with Jason Failes above: a scripture says eagle fly, but anyone can see that. I will take that a step further: now Blick does experiments and says see how well the structure works (I avoid using the word design). Still, what the hell does this have to do with a scripture being so accurate "after 2,700 years" ??
Am I missing something? I imagine you could find similar truth with the turkey vulture that glides quite well, or the albatross. Personally, I would rather soar like the albatross; I believe they soar a lot longer than the eagle.

Anyway, to the point of the post, I find it a disgrace that people like Inhofe can actually still win elections.

Evil Inhofe has familiars:

Roy"d-rage" battle of wits with Dr. Pepper with still no global warming predictions, "Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal scientist for NASA at the University of Alabama in Huntsville -- who questions whether CO2 actually causes "global warming" - nevertheless agreed that the total amount of CO2 that Coke uses is small in comparison with the global total produced by humanity. His calculations place the figure at 4,000 tons of CO2 a day -- worldwide" ("Coca-Cola: Bubbles 'Not a Very Large Part of Our Overall Carbon Footprint'"; By Pete "I" Winn "U-lose", Senior Writer/Editor; Extremist Christian and Republican biased to ignore reality, blow the obvious, create new myths and propaganda to abuse and amuse, justify the pro-life death and destruction, and lie to serve corporate pimp interests; cnsnews.com, 12/15/08).

Inhofe is more than simply a boorish oaf (you may recall the recent senate hearings, where, during testimony on global warming, he rudely referred to Al Gore as "Senator" Gore.) His kind of thinking and inaction imperil the planet, which is our only home and has nothing to do with politics. With a new (and presumably more enlightened) administration coming in, it's time to get down to the business of saving the earth. Precious time has already been lost.

Several thoughts:

"Sun Deniers" don't seem to get it - it's not all just man-made. Global Warming Alarmists have an agenda - government control and money and propaganda. Example: An Inconvenient Truth cannot be shown in England without a propaganda disclaimer:

Judge attacks nine errors in Al Gore's 'alarmist' climate change film
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23416151-details/Judge+attacks+nine+errors+in+Al+Gore's+'alarmist'+climate+change+film/article.do

And the founder of the Weather Channel thinks Al Gore should be sued for financial fraud (!) since he has such a large financial stake in it.

Weather Channel Founder: Sue Al Gore for Fraud
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,337710,00.html

And of course, the scientists who INSIST that the 'debate is over' and no one can possibly disagree, are getting THEIR funding for the crisis THEY SAY is happening. "Global Warming Deniers" are often criticized based on their funding sources - well, what can we say about the scientists who make a living studying 'global warming'.

Then there are other scientists, even from the UN IPCC, who dare to speak their own mind:

"It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don't buy into anthropogenic global warming." - U.S Government Atmospheric Scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA.

Warming fears are the "worst scientific scandal in the history...When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists." - UN IPCC Japanese Scientist Dr. Kiminori Itoh, an award-winning PhD environmental physical chemist.

And now it's time to 'shoot the messenger' - so I expect the above facts to be COMPLETELY ignored. Do prove me right on this last point, so those who bother to read these comments intelligently will hopefully be able to see which camp deals in facts, and who resorts to name calling.

Dearest "Posted by: Patrick | December 18, 2008 9:54 PM";

There is no need to shoot Patrick J. Michaels and waste good lead bullets after a lead sinker is already polluting the environment. However, extremist Republican and Christian propaganda always presents an opportunity for education in the conservative scientific method of global warming. For example, extremist Republican and Christian bathroom wall graffiti has gone to great lengths to lie about the role of the Sun. Yet, they rarely notice a solar flare. (Such notice requires them to plagiarized NASA photographs and then lie about the date as seen in "LABI" rushlimbaugh.com.) My predictions aside, the following 2 CMEs still have been completely ignored by the likes of phony State of Virginia climatologist. (Ozonator hint: I have a track record while the PJMs have a record of crimes against nature and humanity.)

"SOLAR ACTIVITY: Hours ago, something on the far side of the sun exploded and hurled a massive cloud of debris (a CME) over the eastern limb. Using a coronagraph to block the sun's glare, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) photographed the cloud expanding into space: ... Play the movie ... details of the blast are unknown ...could herald an active region (e.g., a sunspot or perhaps an unstable magnetic filament) turning to face Earth in the days ahead" ("What's up in Space"; Dr. Tony Phillips; spaceweather.com, 12/16/08).

"A. Our Ozonator's preamble for Survival ... 1. It could be a very quiet week with lots of solar flares driven by global warming. Or, currently, the Asian ecosystem is showing deep magma upwelling of what could be the start of it catastrophically crashing into the Arabian Peninsula or the Pacific Northwest with a relatively quiet star. The latter will prompt extremist Republican and Christian ninnies to charge ExxonMobil for more global cooling stories. Finally a lessening with significant solar wind and/or CMEs should be of the man-made varieties on both sides of the Sun with CMEs, protons, and 1X+ X-rays. The Earth should generate earthflares of 1,000 - 20,000 REFs, IMFs, GSIs, sprites, and/or NCLs" ("GBRWE 12/14 - 20/08's Extreme Planetary Warnings for Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Solar/Terrestrial Flares from Human Activities"; Robert Rhodes, Supplemental; GBRWE 12/14 - 20/08, 12/13/08).

"CME BUBBLE: Yesterday, Dec. 8th, something exploded on the far side of the sun. The blast propelled a huge bubble of magnetized plasma over the sun's western limb where the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) photographed it expanding into space: Click to play the movie The bubble (a coronal mass ejection or "CME") is heading in the general direction of Saturn and will not hit Earth. ... After a long spell of eerie quiet, the sun is showing signs of life" ("What's up in Space"; Dr. Tony Phillips; spaceweather.com, 12/9/08).

"A. ... 1. ... pay for a little global warming CO2 now or ... Who would have thought in extremist America that you could cause more damage by running SUVs into the ground than jets into skyscrapers? ... the fury of the 5th of 5 weeks of the Persian - Band Aceh - Bhamo Model (11/9 - 15/08) may peak with a reversal last week's trend and smash within continents creating both monster quakes and monster solar and earth flares. ... The Earth and Sun should engage in dueling catastrophic energy discharges. Once more the same tune, Spectacular solar wind and/or CMEs should be of the man-made varieties on both sides of the Sun" ("GBRWE 12/7 - 13/08's Extreme Planetary Warnings for Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Solar/Terrestrial Flares from Human Activities"; Robert Rhodes, Supplemental; GBRWE 12/7 - 13/08, 12/6/08).

Crime doesn't pay for increasing the tragedy of the commons

No extremist court in the US or UK predicted nor noticed this one as well that was generated under GBRWE 12/7 - 13/08. "IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 16/2100Z to 17/2100Z: The geomagnetic field was predominantly quiet. The ACE spacecraft indicated a possible CME signature from a filament that erupted on 12 December" ("Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity 17 Dec 2008"; Space Environment Center, NOAA; STATUS REPORT; spaceref.com, 12/17/08).

Involving drugs, sex, and/or money, one of the few examples of an extremist Republican and Christian actually making any kind of prediction in the real world. "Just weeks after monster storms Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast, a risk management firm flew a handful of the world's top hurricane scientists to Bermuda and its famous pink sandy beaches. ... to predict Atlantic hurricane activity for 2006 to 2010. ... Shortly thereafter, the firm, Risk Management Solutions, or RMS, increased its "modeled insurance losses," which help establish rates for insurers and re-insurers, by 40 percent. ... scientists who have participated in the process have begun questioning the method. ... "For all I know, they believe that they can predict activity five years into the future, but the science does not support this belief," said Roger Pielke Jr., a professor of environmental studies at the University of Colorado who participated in this year's meeting" ("Insurance method for hurricane rates draws skepticism"; By ERIC "dumber than he looks" BERGER, Houston Chronicle; chron.com, 12/18/08). For hurricanes Katrina and Rita., "Judge dismisses hurricane insurance lawsuit" (The Associated Press; nola.com, 12/17/08).

No extremist court in the US or UK would find any fault with this profitable logic either assuming they were investors. "A family ... one of their loved ones was killed in an office building that was set on fire last March, and they said they feel like an insurance company is trying to victimize them again ... the decision makers at Great American Insurance are not upholding their end of the deal. ... the insurance company claims the smoke that killed Marvin Wells, Jeanette Hargrove and Shana Ellis was pollution. ... damages and deaths caused by pollution, including smoke, are excluded on the insurance policy" ("Insurance Company Says Fire Victims Died Of 'Pollution'"; By Carl Willis; msnbc.msn.com, 12/18/08). From the myth of Athena's birth or Dr. James Dobson's "harmless" investors, "Tumor in Colorado newborn's brain contained foot" (The Associated Press; nola.com, 12/18/08). More ideological dictates for biological responses to trauma, "Judge rejects bid to force quicker VA payments" (By HOPE YEN, The Associated Press; nola.com, 12/17/08).

Extremist Republicans and Christians don't have to be bothered with practicing even a hour of science. They only need to immediately drown out the truth with the usual avalanche of lies, greed, and hatred. TV meteorologists and Heartland Institute are frequently support by ExxonMobil.

For example:

Complete with plagiarized NASA/ESA picture of the Sun, "RUSH: We had a call and the caller chickened out ... this guy wanted to know how can you square pollution with global warming or something ... His point was, "Look, I live in Boston and you can see the pollution. You can see the haze." ... A lot of the haze that you are seeing, and it happens in the summertime ... A lot of what you're seeing is an ozone inversion, it's not auto pollution. ... ozone is made by the sun. Ozone is not made by automobiles. ... it would be there every day and nothing would get rid of it because we are supplying it every day. ... You people so concerned about all this, you just need to apply a little common sense, and you need to drop some of the vanity and some of the arrogance. ... so we can do all these things, we must be destroying the planet. ... whose creation we cannot even explain. ... I know Chad Myers. ... a great meteorologist, and he works at CNN ... last night CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight, weatherman Chad Myers was on. Dobbs said, "... global warming ... is it cycles, solar sunspots, solar flares, the 11 year cycle, is that dominate? What's dominant in terms of influencing the weather?" MYERS: To think that we could affect weather all that much is pretty arrogant. ... Also, on Lou Dobbs, he's got Jay Lehr, who is the science director of the Heartland Institute ... LEHR: Clearly, Lou, it is the sun ... RUSH: Shazam, shazam. And anybody with common sense would realize it has to be the sun. ... We cannot steer a hurricane; we can't stop one; we can't dissipate one; we can't create one. We can't steer a tornado; we can't stop snowstorms; we can't stop ice; we can't stop or start anything like that, nothing of major catastrophic consequence. It's absurd. ... We can make grass grow with a little, you know, sprinkler. ... Do you know anybody other than fraudulent insurance claims of people setting their shingles on fire? ... then a rainstorm comes in, and all the evidence of the smoke is gone" ("The Sun Controls Our Climate"; Mr. Rush "baby-safe toxic chemical LABI" Limbaugh of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity - extremist Republican and Christian corporate chap dancers; ponzi's cash cow media outlets of ESSO plagiarism; melamine, BPA, and DDT dope dealers and rulers of Planet-Star Wormwoody Jenkins - screwed General Motors now working on Scooter Store products; rushlimbaugh.com, 12/11/08). "When you talk plagiarism out there, it's hard to remember any right-winger plagiarist. I'm sure there have been. "for thousands of years our earth has undergone cooling and warming under the control of God"

This is a wrong view of the sovereignty of God. No human choice at all? I commented so time last spring, after reading Darwin, that his problem was not with God it was with Calvinists who think that man has no control over his own actions. This is FATALISM! Darwin seems to be anti fatalist to me not anti God.

All that is at stake is a literal interpretation of a book that more and more is looking to me like a recitation of thousands of years of oral history. Never meant to be totally accurate just designed to make a point. This book is Genesis and no Christian can say for sure that evolution did not take place. I personally struggle with the "new species" more logically than anything else. If Humans are evolved from apes then that implies that there is another evolution in place. This sets us up for discussions about what a human is? When we talk about human rights it is important to know what a human is. Or if we talk about the inalienable rights of the Declaration of Indepence who do they apply to? Would lower evolved humans still have self evident rights when the more evolved humans appear? Who decides?

From a normal, decedent leader, Pope Benedict XVI is marking the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of a telescope. ... he wanted to salute all who are marking the 2009 anniversary and UNESCO's World Year of Astronomy. ...the laws of nature can stimulate understanding and appreciation of the Lord's works. In 1992, Pope John Paul II apologized, saying that the denuncuation was a tragic error" ("Pope marks Galileo anniversary, praises astronomy" (news.yahoo.com, 12/21/08).

However, a typical extremist Republican and Christian is still making a profession out of lying, stealing, greed, death, destruction, rewriting history, the Maunder Minimum, Dark Ages and hiding the Sun from humanity. "Questioning the right of other scientists to challenge scientific assumptions and methodologies ... of global warming ... act much like the Catholic Church did with Galileo ... challenge the "conventional wisdom" on global warming must feel a lot like Galileo did when summoned to Rome to be told that his "views" would no longer be tolerated" ("THE RELIGION OF CLIMATOLOGY"; By: Dan Juneau, President of LABI and peerless corporate whore for life and soul to Satan; DAN JUNEAU'S COLUMN; labi.org, 4/23/07).

ExxonMobil's Rex Tillerson may have to fly with bank bailout CEOs. LABI Limbaugh may have to be tested for oxycontin and Sterno. The rank and pile extremist Republicans and Christians have failed at science and now failed at capitalism. Withering parasites of weather bunnies are ugly things.

"Dear Icecap Readers: Donations would be appreciated. Even small ones help. And hopefully finally - you can be a dittohead and do a Vulcan mind meld on LABI's pilonidal cyst to touch the mind of the god of cow pies, avoid Vietnam and Iraq, never crack a book, and watch your pro-life gametes die a cowards death -

Today's extremist Republicans and Christians are tomorrow's Martians, spacemen, and one we call Ann Coulter. "RUSH: Barney Frank is fit to be tied out there, ladies and gentlemen, trying to put his finger in the dike out there, trying to -- (interruption) what is so funny? ... Let me give you some headlines today from the Drudge Report.  ...  Now, if God is writing this sitcom, we'll call it Liberals and Liberalism in America, what God is doing is revealing what a con artist, this guy's got nothing, Algore has nothing on Bernie Madoff.  Do you realize the global warming hoax ... Algore is being displayed here as a liar.  But God ... Oil ... His creation.  Coal is down as well this winter, while we sort out the global warming lies. ... Joe Bastardi today at his blog at Accuweather.com ... he's not a global warming believer. ... if global warming is going to destroy the planet and our climate, where in the world is all this cold coming from?" ("Soap Opera: Liberalism in America"; Mr. Rush "baby-safe toxic chemical LABI" Limbaugh of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity - extremist Republican and Christian corporate chap dancers; ponzi's cash cow media outlets of ESSO plagiarism; melamine, BPA, and DDT dope dealers and rulers of Planet-Star Wormwoody Jenkins - screwed General Motors now working on Scooter Store products; rushlimbaugh.com, 12/22/08).

"A. Our Ozonator's preamble for Survival ... 4. In the our lifetimes, great ice ages seem to be driven by at least the magic of ExxonMobil's hired liars or global warming has been blasting into large chunks of near space. Using magic and fairy dust, ice ages are caused by all that air pollution turning into harmless salts and the contracting ionosphere allows the cold of space to descend over the entire planet. Or, in the following case, I have modeled that components within global warming has enough energy to try to achieve orbit in a stable ring yet only pushes a chunk of cold space onto the Earth. The article suggests that the lower altitude is due to reduced solar activity with solar minimum. "The U.S. space agency says it has discovered the boundary between the Earth's upper atmosphere and space has moved to extraordinarily low altitudes. ... National Aeronautics and Space Administration ... the transition between the ionosphere and space was found to be at about 260 miles altitude during the nighttime, barely rising above 500 miles during the day. Those altitudes, said NASA, were extraordinarily low compared with the more typical values of 400 miles during the nighttime and 600 miles during the day" ("NASA: Ionosphere not where it should be"; by Staff Writers; UPI; spacedaily.com, 12/17/08)" ("GBRWE 12/21 - 27/08's Extreme Planetary Warnings for Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Solar/Terrestrial Flares from Human Activities"; Robert Rhodes, Supplemental; GBRWE 12/21 - 27/08, 12/20/08).
