Charity Auction for Connie

Posted on: June 16, 2009 9:30 AM, by Ed Brayton

I have written before about my friend Connie and her medical problems and you've been very generous in helping out with them over the years. Barry Deutsch, a great political cartoonist, and illustrator Bill Mudron were kind enough to do a one-of-a-kind cartoon for us to auction off to help raise money to pay for the medical equipment her insurance will not cover, which is quite substantial.

You may know Barry Deutsch better as Ampersand from Amptoons. He is an award-winning cartoonist, having won the Charles M. Schulz award. His work has been widely published, but it appears almost exclusively online and in publications. It is very rare that one of his cartoons is done on paper, as this one is. You can see the cartoon here. It's actually a commentary on Connie's situation and the evils of insurance companies.

We decided that the easiest way to do the auction was by using Ebay. Why reinvent the wheel? If you want to bid on the cartoon, click here. The cartoon is drawn on white two-ply bristol board paper. The panel borders and lettering were printed out, the rest is hand drawn in ink, over light blue lines. The paper is approximately 12" x 17", and the image is about 8" by 16".

Both Barry and Bill will autograph the cartoon if you'd like them to. The winning bidder will have it shipped to them. So not only can you help out a great cause, you can get a really cool cartoon to frame and put on your wall too. As always, thanks so much to everyone who has helped out. And a special thank you to Barry and Bill for being so generous with their talents.

Nice cartoon! I know someone who would really enjoy getting that as a gift; probably a lot of us do. It's a great opportunity to buy a gift and make a worthwhile donation with the same dollars.
