The Nevada legislature has overridden a veto by Gov. Jim Gibbons to pass a law allowing domestic partnerships for gays and lesbians:
Only a handful of spectators watched Sunday night as the Assembly voted 28-14 to override Gov. Jim Gibbons' veto of a bill that establishes a domestic partnership law in Nevada. That vote, with the state Senate's 14-7 rejection of the veto Saturday, makes Senate Bill 283 a law that takes effect on Oct. 1.
Under the new law, same-sex and opposite-sex couples can go to the secretary of state's office, sign a registry, pay a fee and secure a domestic partnership contract that essentially gives them the same legal rights and responsibilities as married couples.
Since it's not exactly the same as gay marriage, the sanctity of all those drunken marriages performed at 3 am in Las Vegas is still preserved.

Nice. Heh, one thing I like about NOM is that they inadvertantly say things I really agree with. For instance, there IS a gathering storm -- it's just, you know, a storm of freedom and equality, and history will not be kind to those who resisted it. The momentum appears unstoppable now.
I also liked in NOM's most recent ad when they lamented that "our children will be taught a new way of thinking." Damn, I hope my son is constantly learning new ways of thinking throughout his whole life. There's really not much more I could ask than that!

Given the importance of weddings to the Nevada Tourist Industry, I can't see that full marriage equality will wait much longer. After all, can't you see the twin chapels, with the tacky straight couples getting married by an Elvis impersonator and the tacky gay couples getting married by a Liberace impersonator.
(If you throw shoes in my direction for that comment, my size is 8 1/2. Sorry, but I just couldn't get the image out of my mind. Blame it on the 'first comment of the morning.')

FTA "I don't consider this bill to be marriage," he said. "It is nothing more than a domestic partnership. It provides equality."
So much wrong with that statement.

Prup, the Elvis impersonator is allowed to bring any two organisms into his chapel and marry them. Although I suppose he'd get more gay customers if they could actually get married.
You're right, though. Once the governor sees that gay marriage helps the only thing Nevada cares about, Las Vegas tourism, he'll change his mind.

Brandon:
You forget the Governor of Nevada is a Republican, and therefore committed to the sanctity of marraige against all its enemies, not just gays getting married, but spousal abuse, adultery, divorce, drunken chases on barmaids...
(Stops, remembers who the Governor of Nevada is.)
"neVER Mind."

I was thinking more along the lines of Liza Minelli.Posted by: Taz | June 6, 2009 1:44 PM
But there can't be THAT many of teh GAY in Lost Wages, I mean it's Nevada, home of Harry Reich, I mean Harry Reid, after all.
This is OT but I was volunteering at a local democratic fundraiser, this morning, taking photos at a golf tournament. After the men and ladies got through lying and cheating on the links we had a nice lunch. The overall winners of the event got "naming rights" on a donation to the charity of their choice. They were split between giving it to Catholic Charities and the local SPCA. There was a fair amount of debate going on and I suggested that the guys who wanted it to go to the SPCA should use the argument that if it went to them it would be used to "fix" males.

Even opposite sex couple can get one? That's egalitarian of them.

you shouldn't be able to get married between the hours of 10pm to 8 am then there would be less divorces
